Hello there:

If anyone shoots the 256 Super Mag in the Contender, I would appreciate hearing from you. I am in the process of developing loads for mine at this time. I also shoot/load for the 256 Win. Mag. and so far, so good on loads for it. Thanks in advance.

My barrel is cut so I can use 221 firball brass or 357 brass by changing the extactor. Load Data: Using 221 brass, rem 7 1/2 Br primer, H4227 powder wt. 14.0 grs, 85 gr Nosler Bt #43004 bullet , OAL 2.189 length, 14 13/16 Van Horn Contender barrel.. shoots Approx  2290 fps. You know the rule start lower and work up 5 to 10%. Will shot well If I do my part. Twyman

Casper, there's a good article in one of my old Varmint Masters magazines on the 256 Super Mag. It was quite an improvement over the standard 256WM if I remember correctly. I'll look to see if I can find it and post the data they have listed.  Rick

I have a .256 SM also, by VVCG. I shoot the 75 gr hp's. Deadly accurate 16.5 inch Encore barrel. I used the same load data from the Varmint Hunter MAG. H4227 is all I have tried so far. I believe(without looking) that  I use 19.0-19.5 grains of H4227. There is a picture of it farther down this forum.

Thanks to all who replied and helping me out. Now, how many use 221 or 223 brass to make the 256 Super Mag ?? I found out the hard way, even with annealing, things don't turn out rosy. Anyone got an easy way to whip this rascal, by making it a lot easier to form brass for it ??
Again, thanks in advance.

Zip, I have a shortened 300 Win Mag die like the Varmint Hunter Mag article says, drops it down to .30 cal, then I run it into the .256 and I'm set. I have ruined a few cases but only because I wasn't paying good attention at the time. I had seperated some cases that were annealed or not. Didn't notice any difference in case life. Both are still going strong, at least 6 or 7 times for each. I got all the die set up with the barrel when I bought it.

Zip,
Before I got around to shortening a 30-06 sizer, I used a 30 Herrett die first then right into to the 256 die, both work well but like Moe says you'll ruin a few if you're not paying attention......havent shot it enough yet to comment on case life.

:D BTW Moe, thats a good shooting barrel, Thanks!

Hello Again:

Again, many thanks to all of ya'll. I dug out my 30 Mauser Pistol dies that I bought just for things like reforming brass. I used them not long ago, helped bro-in-law form cases for his 256 Win Mag from 357 brass. Got my dies back, and now, I'm using the 30 Mauser Pistol dies (Lee) and they work wonderful. I am trimming now necking my 223 brass to 30 Caliber, then run them in just enough to set the shoulder and neck them on down to 256 Super Mag. I then trim them off the correct length. Just had time to test fire this morning before getting ready to head off to church, and done good. I will try a few more, then change my extractor out to rimless. Belive me, I lost too many cases, even with annealing, and careful attention to details trying the 357 Maximum cases. I'm going to save them for my next project. Going to get me a 30 Max barrel. That will be a breeze, all I will have to do, neck them down to 30 Cal. with my 30 Mauser Pistol dies and fireform. Thanks to all again.
