T/C Contender headspace
« on: February 19, 2008, 03:00:58 PM »
I have 2 frames, the newer one has .015 between the barrel and frame, this is sloppy I think. The other frame has .004 clearance with the same barrel. Anyone know what T/C thinks is good or bad?

I have to ask these questions.
Are you measuring to the face of the firing pin bushing or the breech face ? (they are not the same thing)

What did you use to measure it ?

You can call a tech at TC and get the straight scoop but this condition can be fixed quite easy and for convinience it is best to have both frames gap the same. Makes loading for them so much easier.

I have measured a couple of mine. They both were about .003" Since you tried the same barrel on both frames I would consider it a frame problem. That seems very excessive to me. Frame stretch maybe?       kN

That sounds very excessive to me as well.  I've had numerous frames and many barrels and never had any combination anywhere close to that.  I would definitely call TC. GOOD LUCK,  Walt

The G2 frame was ordered as a 22 rimfire and I noticed the bulge on the cases immediatly. I had the older frame so I put the barrel on it and started shooting it in local silhouette matches. I then ordered a 30-30 barrel from Ed's TC and realized the headspace was just too much to use with confidence. I used gauge tape to measure the gap. You close the action on the tape and measure it where it came in contact with the breech face. The gap is easily noticable. Years ago I had a 44 magnum barrel that did the same thing in a much worse way, .045 gap but in this case it was the barrel. It actually shot okay but I just didn't like it.
