My hats off to Hornady
« on: March 06, 2008, 12:46:41 PM »
Got my new 224 GNR Handi and a set of Hornady -- Custom Grade New Dimension Dies , man i love these things , the neatest feature is the sleeve in the bullet seater die , it slides up with the stroke of the press and keeps the bullet in line as it enters the case mouth , did i say i LOVE this die set .  ;D

Those boys were realy thinking when they designed this thing , and the best part is no more pinched fingers .  ;)

I know what you mean,I got a set for the 223 and really like the inline bulle seater!! And Hornays customer service is 2nd to none, while setting the sizer die up and grabbing a few cases to size I broke the decapping pin, totally my fault.Called them and told them what I did, after laughing sent new parts out same day no charge!

Now ya know why I love em so much, that seater die is as good as it gets IMO!! Not only are the ND dies great, they still have their almost free bullet offer going, for $4.95 and a .41¢  stamp, you can get a box of bullets from their list!!  ;)

How is their warranty?
I just received a set of 221 fireball full length dies .Found three little peaces of steel in the box. When I took the sizing die apart to clean it, I found where they came from. The top of the expander is broke down to where the threads start. Just a fluke I'm sure. Tried to call them but they were closed for some meeting.  will call  tomarrow I guess.

The interesting part is that they went to the sliding sleeve to save manufacturing costs. They are the only dies that combine a sliding alignment sleeve, disassemble for cleaning without affecting settings (even while still in the press), optional micrometer adjustment screw, and ability to seat and crimp in one step. Oh, yeah, and they come with the best lock rings on the planet.

But to be fair, Redding Competition seaters, Forster seaters, and RCBS competition (inline windowed) seaters also have a sliding alignment sleeve. Dillon seaters disassemble for cleaning without affecting the settings, and Forster seaters can be had with and without the micrometer seater (and they come with a fine lock ring too).

I am sure the Hornady dies are good and the seater comes as part of a regular die set (a good thing). I do not have a Hornady die set, but do have a Hornady 22 caliber neck die. It is of good quality. I have found it will not neck size 22 Hornet, because the neck is too thin. :( I have a RCBS windowed bullet seater and it sure is slick. I bought it as part of a set with a full length sizer. Of course it is a "special" die set you pay a premium for. :( You start the case into the die, when it starts to move the sleeve up you drop the bullet into the window in the side in the top of the sleeve. It keeps the neck and bullet in alignment until it seats the bullet. It has a micro adjustment on top so once I have it set I can quickly change from one bullet to the next or from case to case with out checking OAL (.050" per full turn). I use it for 221 FB, 22 Hornet, 222 and used to use it for 223. I bought it for the 222, but found I could use it with the others as well. I now have a Forster Ultra Micrometer seater die for the 223 with a sliding sleeve and a micrometer head. I feel it is the best next to a Wilson seater that you press by hand or use in an arbor press.

Most of my dies are Hornady. However, I also have some Redding and RCBS and LEE Collett. They all have their purpose and all do a darn fine job. It's competition for the consumer dollar that makes these products so good. I only hope that all these companies keep selling "stuff" and remain profitable....so we can keep buying good stuff!
