7x57 and 175gr Hornady roundnose
« on: February 17, 2008, 04:05:38 AM »
I have a sweet little Mauser custom and too much time on my hands (had hand surgery and I'm down for the count until it heals).  I can do some reloading with alot of gauze padding and a glove.  So...I was thinking of a winter boar hunt at my favorite Vermont preserve and I was thinking how cool the 7x57 would be to use.  And then I was thinking...how about a more traditional, non premium load???

I'm thinking 175gr hornady interlock round nose.  Premium boar will run 300++ and I'd want a heavier bullet anyway.  Anyone have a load suggestion????

Boy, That would be the Bullet that I would be using. RL 15 works real well in My 8x57, Can't see why it wouldn't in it's little Brother. Been thinking about a Vt. Boar Myself, Had a Friend go there, and he had a great Time - Boar on a charge vs. a 358 win., The 358 won @ The wire. I guess things got real exciting for a few seconds.

I know it's a long way from a 300# Russian to a 100# WT but when I came to live in WV, I tried some 154gr Horn RN bullets in both a 7-08 and a 7x57 with awesome results. Talk about a slam dunk.....
I don't post loads in cyberspace but H414 worked well for me as did IMR4350. That was with the 154gr bullets.

Gonna try a few loads before I go.

McKie...will know after June 12th when the Maine moose lottery is drawn.  If I win a permit, I won't go this year....but...if my luck holds....I guess I'll be going to VT.  Welcome to meet me there, will probably be the 1st weekend in December.  I love hunt'n hogs in the snow!
