scared to put a good scope on the muzzleloader
« on: February 12, 2008, 03:52:47 PM »
I got my hammerspur and scope mount from "Marlin".  Excellent service btw.

I got a million scopes and for some reason I'm wiggin out thinking that the scope will be all cruddy from ML powder and solvent etc.  I use the primer carriers so that will probably flash and do stuff to the scope.

yeah I know it sounds stupid. Im a ML noob.  Also the break action causes me to break open and clean the rifle upside down laid across a plastic lawn chair and the solvent will run off on to the scope.

and your all thinking....   ::)

I do need a scope on this rifle, and I can't wait to shoot it. I've got jury duty next week and a lot of afternoon trips to the range are planned.   I just can't roll w/o a scope.

John,

The NEF's vent most of the gases out the side through the slot the carrier handle goes through. You might get a small amount of soot on your scope directly above the vent, but the heat and flash goes out the slot. A piece of tape on your scope over that spot will take care of it. Quick Release rings will take care of the cleaning problem.

Scoping a muzzleloader

I have a scoped NEF Huntsman that I use with a breech cover. I first used this on an inline T/C that would scorch the bottom of the scope just from the primer blast. For my NEF, I cut a piece of heavy flexible vinyl that fits around the action and over the primer carrier slot. I glued and stapled small velcro attachments to the vinyl so it can be tighted or released at the bottom of the action. I have used just one of these covers for two years although it is getting scorched. They work well to protect the scope and the mounts. Another thing is to use high scope mounts to keep the scope bottom away from the action. There are commercial action covers I have seen but they are for inlines. Also there are quite a few reasonably priced ML (shotgun) scopes that I do not feel bad about getting soot on.

Hi well my brother in law has a huntsman and he mounted a pistol scope on it 2 power Leupold eer I tried it out and it was a great idea.thats right i forgot to mention that he mounted it where the rear sight sits and  puts the scope further up the barrel and presto no junk on the scope i did some quick shoulder mounting with his gun and it was right there. i am going to go out this weekend for rings and a base for my Leupold pistol scope to mount on my new sidekick that's right cabellas still has plenty to go around. also try out the .25 acp breach plug for around one hundred bucks you will be all set to go.CZAR

See  Another Scout Mount in the FAQs and Help sticky, the Weaver 92A base fit a lot of H&R barrels that use two screws to mount the rear barrel sight. You can also mount a 2x or 2½x shotgun scope forward on a scope rail to clear the breech area and hammer
