Red or White light for hogs??
« on: April 22, 2008, 03:05:56 AM »
Do hogs shy away from white lights, needing a red filter?? Thanks in advance for any tips.

Red lens. Anything above a rabbit is a red lense. Have always heard that and it has worked.

I've had two and only two instances that I shot a hog with a light. Both times was with no filter because I didn't have one at either time. Was very surprised it didn't seem to bother them being in the light. One case was accross about 15 yards of stock tank and that may have had something to do with them not spooking. Was also very surprised to see how little their eyes shined.Anyone else notice this?

I have had very good success with white lights. Red are probably less noticeable by the hogs, but as long as it's not too severe a contrast (too bright) they don't seem to mind. I have even used a spotlight by pointing it up while turning it on and sloooowwwllllly bringing it down until it was on the hogs. If the change is gradual enough they don't react.

The main reason I use white is that it is easier on my old eyes.

I have used red and white. To me the hogs don't pay much attention to the red lights and they get skittish with a white light unless the light is already on before they come into the area.  I have changed over to green  floresents lights and they seem to be the best.  I have had hogs come in and lay down under the green lights. Have had as many as 20 hogs at one time under the green.  The green simulates moon light and they are very cheap. They only draw about 2 amps and they will run many many hours on a battery.

I usually stalk feeders and waterholes at night using moonlight. I spot a hog sneak as close as I like, line it up in my scope and just before I pull the trigger I light thim up with the spotlight. Lately I use an unaltered Brinkman spotlight, the one with two seperate lights built in you can get a Walmart. However I have of late been thinking about setting up a fishing green light, one of the new LED kind powered by a 12 volt marine battery that is in turn recharged by an automotive  solar panel and if I can find one I want a switch that turns it on at night and off at daylight. I have everything except the switch, anyone know where I can find one?

The green fishing light is what I us. They work great.  I dont use a timer switch. I turn the lights on about 1 hour before dark and the hogs just come on in.  If I leave during the night, I just leave them on if I am coming back in the early morning hours.  I have left my stand at midnight and returned about 4:30 AM  and have had hogs laying down under the lights.  I found a web site that had timers before but they where about $70 each, I will look again and see if I can find the web site.

It would seem that it wouldn't be hard to get a photocell switch that would work for pretty cheap. Which green light do you use and what batteries does it take? Will it last all night long? I saw some new ones at Academy that were LED types, one used a 12 volt battery and the other used AA batteries.

I use the 21" florescent.  They are water proof and they come with a 20 foot cord.  I use a 12 volt marine battery.  I can run the lights all night on a weekend without charging the battery. I usually get about a month on the battery before I have to recharge. I mainly hunt some thick bottoms and I can't get enough sunshine on my solar panel to keep them charged, although I have one that does get enough sunshine and I have had it run for about three months before I have to recharge it.  i don't get to hunt every weekend but I do hunt about every other weekend.

Where my hog feeder is a solar panel could keep a battery charged for a long time if it wasn't drained too bad. I want the light to come on every night by itself. I also have some of the flourescent lights though mine are 18 inches long and I would use them.
