45/70 brass
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:37:13 AM »
Hey Everyone, I have never tried any reloading but I would like to someday. I have 100 pieces of Federal 45/70 brass and I was wondering if this is worth hanging on to. I don't know if this considered thin walled brass or what? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Jeff

honestly Jeff,
i dunno, im new to reloading and the 45-70. so i cant say. but i would think that if its new or once fired it should fine for a few reloads.
you can always mic it, check the dimentions and anneal it, trim it and all that and see what you end up with.
by the way, the replies to questions have slowed some the last few days anyhow..

Modern 45-70 brass is rated well, sectioned 45-70 brass is just as thick as 500S&W brass in the critical areas. Federal brass is good stuff, not available as a component, depending on how warm you load it, it should last a loooong time loaded at trapdoor level which is what it was in factory form, keep it and you'll be set for quite a while and with the rising cost of components you'll be ahead. ;)

There's nothing wrong with it.  The 45-70, being an essentially a straight walled case, you can load and shoot it until it splits.  If you really want to extend the life, after 10 or so reloads, you can anneal the necks and get some more use out of it.  Even the Ruger loads are relatively mild pressure compared to a bottle-necked cartridge and the cases will last a surprisingly long time.

Thanks for your responses guys. I just acquired a .223 contender barrel also so I have at least 2 cartridges I can reload for now. I didn't figure it was worth getting into reloading for just the 45/70. So don't be surprised if I have some reloading questions in the near future. :-\

Thanks  Jeff   :)

Quick ,are you sure Federal 45-70 isn't available as a component! I have a box of the stuff just waiting to be loaded. I got it at a flea market in deal for several hundred rounds of 45-70 loaded and not.

I've not seen it, if it is available, hasn't been anywhere I've looked. If anyone was to have it, Midway would at least list it out of stock, they don't list it at all, just Rem, Win and  Starline, same for Grafs.

I may be mistaken but I believe that a LONG TIME AGO (in a faraway land), Federal did used to sell component brass...

but unlike most fairy tales, it doesn't have a happy ending - they don't sell it to us now.   :P
