Leupold QR Ring Question
« on: July 07, 2003, 02:01:49 PM »
I just got my Leupold 3X9X40 scope mounted on my 209 X 50.  I bought the Leupold QR Base and LOW rings from Mid South Shooters Supply.  I bought the low rings because this was suggested by the supplier's web site.

Anyway, I noticed when I got it back from the gun shop that I only have about a quarter of an inch clearance between the top of the hammer and the bottom of the scope in it's resting position.  I have yet to fire this gun.

At first I thought that I would just get a hammer extension to make it accessible and be done with it.  After finding this forum and reading other posts, I am now concerned that the hammer will come in contact with the bottom of the scope when fired.

Anyone out there with experience in these matters?  Do I need to tear everything apart and get some Medium or High rings?

i have high rings on all my encore rigs.  I tried a low set on a simmons aetec and the virgin valley base contact time!  so i turned to the leupold qrw rings in high and have about a 1/4 inch as well.  firing out of a 300mag i have no problems and no sign of impact.  just my two sense maybe i'm lucky but i wouldn't take much of a chance to hard to cock a hammer in gloves on a cold day while staring down a 150 class buck.   for me i'll take a higher mount and easier time!

Thanks for the reply.

I would also like to hear from anyone with experience on the quarter inch clearance I have between the top of the hammer and the bottom of my scope.  Yeah, I probably need more for ease of use, but will it contact the scope if I fire it like it is?

Thanks for the reply -  I just thought that since the hammer is at half cock, it could move upwards and hit the bottom of the scope when it slams forward.  I am still leaning towards tearing it down and sending the low rings back to Mid South for some Mediums.

I have the Warne Maxima base with Warne Maxima QD rings.  This leaves me about 1/2" of clearance between the hammer and scope.  Feels just about right.  They are the medium rings.  I would suggest you try medium rings in the Leupold line.  Gives you a bit more clearance w/o having to streatch your neck to still see through the scope as with high rings.
