Is this a good buy?
« on: February 20, 2008, 06:33:56 PM »
I have found a Remington 700 in 300 RUM.  It is the old Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation model (stainless with a camo stock).  It was purchased with 3 boxes of shells and he still has a box and a half of factory ammo left along with the other brass.  I tis topped with a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x scope.  I am not sure of the objective size or the reticle yet, he is going to get back to me on that.  He wants $850 for it.  Is this a good price?

If the gun is what you want then yes it's a fair price. It's not a steal by any means but it's fair for both buyer and seller. You can look at the scope as being worth $300-$350 which makes the gun costing you about $500-$550 which isn't a bad price on average for a used Remington 700 around here. I'd say that price is very close to what used ones thru scoped go for on dealer's shelves.

The chambering would turn me off and keep me from buying it but if it's what you want then go for it. I think there were at least 3-4 of them new with box at the store I buy from last year and they sure took a Looooong time to move. I don't recall the exact price on them but seem to recall they were marked close to $100 over the SPS which basically is what they are but with a camo rather than more plain stock.

This is the original RMEF model not the new XCR RMEF edition.  I believe it was made in 300 RUM in 2001 then other calibers for then a different caliber for each of the following years.   I doubt this would make much difference in the value of the gun though.  I realize that 300 RUM is not the caliber for everyone but I do like it and I already own one in a BDL.  I am also thinking of buying my brothers CDL and then having one of the three built into a 458 Lott.
Anyways I will be making a trip to look at the gun tomorrow and then I will decide if  I want to buy it.  The plus side of the deal is that there is almost 60 pieces of brass that come with the gun and I cannot find any 300 RUM brass anywhere.
