Rusty shooter
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:38:54 AM »
It's been a while since I shot the 44 magnum. I usually use it just for hunting now.

In preparation for an upcoming hog hunt I had to get refamiliarized with the magnum. My first session at the range was terrible, with flinching and trigger control problems galore and getting used to shooting a revolver again. Second session was much better and I'm shooting OK out to 50 yards. Next session I need to practice game size targets out to 100 yards.

Bottom line is that if you've got a hunt coming up, don't wait to get out and practice with that 44. Even if you've been been shooting other pistols weekly, as I have been.

OOPS!! I thought I read a "B" in the first word of this post!!
BUT I'll get back on subject now. I find that the .44 mag revolver is hard to maintain accuracy with. I have to practice with it MORE often than any other gun, rifle or pistol.! Even with a scope, it takes me several sessions to be what I feel is hunting accurate. I don't normally shoot at much over 100 yards with it and LIKE to be able to break clay birds at that range for hunting. Of course I will use any rest available for that range. The recoil of my SBH surprises me every time I start using it.About the time I'm used to the recoil ,I get the accuracy I want.Good luck on your hunt!

That's very interesting. I have the same experience.

Do you have a more powerful handgun that you use regularly?

The 44 is the most powerful revolver I own. I use 6.5JDJ also for hunting, and 22LR, and 221 Fire Ball. Although I would like a 480 Ruger or a 454 Freedom Arms, I just don't want to spend the money because the 44 gives me everything I want in a repeater for midwest hunting of deer and hogs.

Your profile lists your location as Sansabelt, Bermudaz. Have you moved to the midwest and where, generally speaking, if you prefer?

My go to gun is the 6.5JDJ for most of my handgun shooting. I do have a 358JDJ and a 45-70 ,15" barrel for when I want to impress people. Even the 30-30 is more power full than a .44mag. ON PAPER! but that big 240 grain slug shows its stuff on deer.
