Which barrel and stock set?
« on: February 22, 2008, 11:31:06 AM »
I'm going to send my frame back to get it refinished and to fix a loose pin. While it's there I'm going to have another barrel fitted and a new stock set installed.
I have stocked up on 30 caliber bullets, so I'm wanting a barrel to shoot these in, either 30-30, 308 or 30-06.
My only stock set I have is a synthetic straight comb that came with the 45-70. I'm wanting to get a Monte-Carlo stock for use with a scope.
What are your recommendations for a stock set and choice of 30 caliber barrel?

Thanks!

As you can probably tell from my group pics, the checkered laminated MC stocks are my favorite, they get my vote. ;)

Me too! look at my avatar, it's my 223 Ultra. I vote for the 30-30, it is a great round, unless you are going after targets at +200 yards, then the '06.

I was looking on H&R's web site at the barrel accessories program link and they don't show the laminated stocks.
How much is a laminated monte-carlo butt stock and forearm?
Do they have different colors to choose from?

Thanks!

Yep. Green camo, Cinnamon. I have both and the fit and finish is excellent.

Hey McLernon, It sure would be nice to see the Green camo & Cinnamon side by side! Hint, hint! ;)
Did you get these from H&R? If so do you remember the cost?
Thanks!

Here's a SxS pic, although the camo stock in uncheckered, they're available both ways.

NEF won't ship to Canuckistan so I bought my stock sets from Brownells(they still like Canucks I guess). Just google on Brownells and look under manufacturer's parts. They stock them for sure along with other NEF parts and they are great to deal with.

You can order from Brownell's if you want to spend more money, the forend is $33.14, the butt is $73, compared to $32 and $66 at H&R.

Tim you have alot more information about H&R products than H&R does!
I looked on their web site and it didn't list the laminates so I just figured I'd have to call them, or ask someone who had bought them. I should have known you would have this information. You are a wealth of knowledge!
Sorry for not checking the FAQ's first, I should have known.
There is a big price difference between the laminates and the wood or synthetic stocks. I'm kinda leaning towards the standard wood because of the price.
Are the laminates really that much better or are they just more eye appealing?

I also reload for all three of the 30 calibers that are available in the Handi. I have a couple of 30-30 Winchester 94's and a 30-30 AI in a 24" barreled Marlin 336. I've got a 308 Competitor handgun and a Spartan Gunworks combo gun with a 12 over 308. In 30-06 I have a Browning BAR. I inventoried my brass and I have alot more 30-06 brass than the others and only one gun chambered for this cartridge.

GOOD SHOOTING!

You know my standard answer what someone asks "which one", ALL of em, just figure out which to buy first!! ;D

The big caveat on the laminated stocks is a little more weight, but they're more stable and on the longer barrels like the 25-06 and 280, better balanced, but it's mainly just a matter of preference, I like the looks of the lams out of the box and I prefer checkered stocks. But if you like to refinish the pallet wood stocks, they can be made to look a lot nicer with not a lot of work and are a bit lighter.

I added a Brownell's link to my previous post, it has all of the H&R parts they stock.  ;)
