Coyote questions
« on: March 08, 2008, 01:20:08 AM »
Guys, I'm having trouble!
Have 6 double hole sets(#1.75 four-coil offset).  Took the utmost care not to leave too much of my scent at the sets, sure some was left....  I know that coyotes are moving in the area very heavily.  But my sets are not attracting them at all.  Bait is beaver, and have even used some 'eye candy' sticking out of the hole(small piece of beaver fur).  Hoping that more sets will help...going to do 4 more this afternoon, but going to use some extra raccoon meat from some earlier trapping.  Don't have any 'eye candy' fur from them...will that matter?

When I check these sets, I do it from the roadway with a spotting scope to keep the area free of my scent.  I add bait once a week to the sets, and I'm only there for moments.  Coyote tracks have been as close as 10 feet to one set, but they just won't come in.  Any suggestions?  Should I try some kind of lure?  What about re-locating some crap close to the set?(They leave plenty on the roadways!)

Your checking  system is okay.  You dont have to bait  every  week unless  you have ants or something taking bait.   Im thinking someone else in yr area might be using same   type of setfor yotes ect... I would  use some type of flat set and  just small   dab  (end of q-tip size) gland lure   or JUST  urine, fox or  cat , doesnt make any differance and see what happens... lots of variables  could be affecting your sets in your area.  If yotes are there   and not working your sets , do something differant dont stagnate,  When you make if you do the flat sets dont worry about them even if its three weeks UNLESS it rains heavy... you might well be surprised what happens.... Good Luck...

Try a little gland lure! You dont have to re bait every week when using lures. Ive had sets i pulled from an area a month and 1/2 before still being worked by yotes! It changed the way i think on luring totally!! If using dbl dirt holes do the walk thru type and use 2 different scents, one in each hole. Or as lee said just a squrit of pee(Not yours)LOL! Go subtle  with the smells!

It's a tough time of the year for catching coyotes with bait.I would use more gland lure and urine in post sets. You will do better with Territorial response now. It's past the breeding season, they are checking out den sites and establishing territories. If you are going to use bait, try on of the better prepared baits, something from Halseth,Graham or O'Gormans Powder River.I like Halseths Horsewhisper or Fur Country's Double Cross.John Graham(Fur Country) makes topnotch Gland lure and has good coyote urine.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

if coyotes are coming up to the set and not committing on a regular basis without, they are attracted to and seeing your sets. Don't worry too much if any about lures or baits- if they are seeing your sets, they are. Beaver down a hole will certainly attract canines enough to work the set. A good lure will help, but don't get into the mindset that there is any magic lure- every coyote trapper will swear by a different brand or type.

pardon me for assuming, but you sound like a new comer to coyote trapping. The reason I say that, is you mentioned 6 double dirthole sets. while it is a good changeup type set, its not a set experienced trappers use much of at all, except in isolated sets.

Don't over think coyotes as far as THE SET goes. you will never quit learning to understand them, but the sets and concepts are simple.

make your sets natural- forget the double dirtholes- make a simple dirthole under a natural backing such as a weed clump, a yucca, sage- whatever is in your area. make the hole end back under the backing, make a slightly depressed pattern and put that trap out in front 8-10 inches.

poor visuals are te cause of more cooyte refusals than anything else in my book- I'm thnking oyur sets look unnatural- and they just want nothing to do with tme up close-

a good lure can get them closer- but unnatural, staged sets still spook yotes....trappnman

Trappenman is right, go subtle! All they have to do is smell it . They'll check out strange new odor that they come across! A mistake i made a lot this year was in my dirt hole sets (i made them to big 1 1/2" wide hole. Just swizzel a pc of rebar to make a hole & pack out the unused dirt! Blend in naturally as possible! They'll find it!

No need for a pardon....I'm as green at coyote as it gets!

Set 4 more double hole sets, should have taken some pictures...  These sets are pretty well blended/natural, at least for a amateur.  I used this set to increase the chance of a catch.  I took an extra #2 off set and made my first post set.  Set it up at a territory crap zone(don't know what else to call it).  Looks to be the local "my-crap-is-bigger-than-your-crap" area....  Used some of my buddies bottled coyote urine from his first coyote this season, taken just a few miles away from my sets.  We'll see?

Keep the suggestions coming...I need all the help I can get!

I cant trap k-9s right now so all i can do is spout out gooo on trapping! But im with trappenmn on the dbl dirt hole set! I think its better to have two sets(single dirt holes)  about 30ft apart then one dbl dirt hole! Shake it up a little!  Dont give them the same thing to look at! If they didnt like one dbl dirt hole then the gig is up! Dont put all your eggs in one set!! Thats a good on there!! If anybody wants to use i want my royalties!! LOL
