Rebarreling a Remington 541S info needed
« on: February 15, 2008, 07:35:36 AM »
What am I allowed when rebarreling a 541S Remington to meet the current NRA SB hunter rules? What barrel contour can
I go to? How little taper can I have? Does the barrel have to be blue or can I go with a stainless steel barrel? what can the maximum barrel length be?
Thanks for any info. Steve

I'm too far out of touch with NRA rules as I've not shot the game in at least 20 years. Back then there was a minimum pull weight on the trigger, a maximum weight of the rifle and max but not minimum dimensions on the fore end.

I bought a 540 Position rifle and actually got turned away at a club when I tried to use it stock for the fore end being too large. I got out the wood working tools and reshaped the stock to comply with their stated dimensions and never got questioned on it again.

I don't recall there being a barrel length rule and can't imagine why it would matter if blued or SS.

But then as I said I'm at least 20 years out of touch with the rules as I've been retired from competition at least that long.

Per 3/05 rule book max barrel length of 26" no spec on taper just says tapered (as long as muzzle is smaller than breech it's tapered). Max weight of 8.5 lbs with min trigger of 2 lbs, and must be a hunting style stock that fits the NRA jig

Volleyman,   The barrel contour max depends on the stock that you will be using.  From my experience reparreling 580 and 581 you can go with a # 3 taper with the barrel cut back to 22 or 24 inches.   22" barrel will make a muzzle diameter of about 3/4" which is about right imo.
You can use this rifle in both hunter and standard and the rifle will feel good to handle.

BTW  remington 581 are still available for less than $ 200.  Numrich arms sells  a nice stock for about $ 50 for these.    Instead of mutulating your 541s,  why not just try to pick up a 581.  They are the same rifle but just not as pretty.  With a new stock you can't tell the difference between the two.

If you use the # 3 barrel on your 541s you will have to enlarge the barrel channel of the factory stock that  ruin the value of it as a collector type.    I guess it all depends on whether you intend to keep it and shoot it or one day trade up.   I have had several Anschutz rifles in the past,  but now shoot a custom 581( one gun ) for both hunter and standard,  and it shoots as good as or maybe better than an Anschutz.

I guess the first question would be Why rebarrel?   Most 541s models shot very very good, usually under 1 inch groups at 100 meters were easily done.  If I were going to spend 4 to 500 bucks rebarreling a rifle for silhouette I think I would spend about $10 and get a NRA Silhouette rule book and that will give you most of the answers  on weight, length and taper allowed or at least call the silhouette dept and ask some questions.  Like the other poster said if you are just going to use it for the action get an old 581 and cut and whittle on that.  I did that years ago and put a Hart barrel on a 581 to make a standard rifle and it shoots great, but the originial 581 would shoot under an inch at 100.  Some people even put some Anschutz triggers on them but you can re work the rem trigger and get them down to 4 or 5 ounces.   Other answers you were looking for: blue or stainless OK   Length 26 but that is to long for a rimfire,  Hunter barrel has to be tapered.  weight of rifle 8 1/2 lbs with scope, rings and mag.  Hunter trigger 2 lbs.

The reason for the rebarrel is that the chamber had a dummy cartridge stored in it a long time and there was some corrosion in the throat. I will have the gunsmith look at it and see if he can set it back and touch up the chamber.

If this is the only reason for a re barrel,  It would be much better to just set the barrel back a little and cut a match chamber.  Those old guns were very accurate.
