New To Archery
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:25:27 AM »
Just started shooting bow yesterday.  I bought a browning trophy flite off of a friend for $75.  The draw length is perfect for me.  Within an hour i had sighted in on a 15 yard pin and could get about a softball sized group.  Then i tried for a 25 yard pin with about the same results.  So for not a bad deal. he also gave me 6 carbon arrows, 125 grain target tips and 3 blade broadheads.

My only concern is its set up with a draw weight of 55 lbs.  Is that enough to bring out durring deer season or will i need to get the draw weight increased? Also  3 blades??? good or not soo good

Fifty five pounds is plenty, the biggest part of killing deer for me is shot placement.  As long as you are in the kill zone with your arrow you will have success.  I shoot three blade broadheads that are about as basic as can be and I have good success with them.  It seems that some of the people you talk to tend to brag about how many pounds they can pull back instead of what is needed to get the job done.  My bow is set up at 60 pounds and my Daughters is set up at 40 pounds.

Thank you, that helps alot.  Actually it wasnt anyone else that put the draw weight in my head, it was mostly me.  I was shooting with a friend that has a bow set up with a 70lb draw with different cams and all and his flew so much faster and hit alot harder.  Mine with target tips were barely getting in the back 2 inches. Some actually hit my mark but would bounce right off.  My friend said the bag was out in the rain and then froze and some of the spots where a little tighter than others being an older bag.  but he never had that problem so it kind of worried me.  Then again i will be shooting blades at a deer, not barely pointed target tips

Did you actually check the draw weight or are you going with what the guy told you?  If the bow has older strings and cables on it they might be stretched a little and that will drop your draw weight down.  Any archery shop or Gander Mountain will be able to check your draw weight or if you have a scale to hang deer from you can check it your self.

Most states only require a 40lb draw weight for big game hunting
