Bullet selection really depends upon the ranges you expect to have shots at, what makes a good long range ML bullet doesn't always make a good 30 yard bullet...
For shots under 125 yards, the 300gr .451 Hornady XTP in a MMP-12 or MMP-24 sabot is a good start, they can be bought in bulk and a ton of money saved...If this bullet doesn't work, the 250 or 300gr Barnes MZ gives an exit everytime on lung shot whitetails...There are several others that are out there, but I have used both of these to harvest deer...The important thing to notice is that they are both hollow point bullets and not very aerodynamic, so after 125 yards or so, they really start to drop...
Over 125 yards or so, I prefer the T/C Shockwave/Hornady/SST bullest in 250 grains or the Dead Center bullets...I have killed several with the Shockwave, out to 143 yards...I like the design of the Dead Centers, but they didn't hit dead center for me...
A few years back I did some testing with the Barnes, Hornady and Shockwave bullets...Both the Barnes and Hornady grouped well at 100 yards with 100grs of Goex FFF, whereas the 250 Shockwave preferred 90grs of Goex FFF....After sighting in 2 1/2 high at 100 yards with each, I backed up to 150 yards and shot another group....The Shockwaves hit 4-6 inches higher than the others, even with less powder...
On powder, I usually use Goex FFF, I can still buy it for $11.55 a pound...
I did buy 3 pounds of Pyrodex 3 years ago for $5 bucks a pound, but I've since shot it all up...
