new hulls
« on: February 27, 2008, 05:23:07 PM »
I am thinking about some of the new primed 12 ga 23/4 clear hulls that cables sells, but I have only reloaded fired hulls with the crimp already formed

how will I go about forming the crimp on the new hulls.

I use the RCBS 12 GA reloading dies for my press.

My advice to you is to put all such thoughts out of your head and NEVER EVER again let them come into your head. You really REALLY REALLY don't wanna do that. I've tried it several times and never ever not once got a decent looking shell from a new case. Buy once fired or just buy factory ammo and reload it.

If you chose to ignore this advice then before you try to load that first one buy the little brass thingy that replaces your crimp starter made for this job. It's gonna set you back about $30. I bought one to use with the RP 28 gauge cases I bought and then proceeded to lose it before I ever used it the first time. I have absolutely no clue where it has gotten off to so I still have 500 new RP 28 gauge cases sitting in bags waiting to be loaded that likely will still be sitting in bags waiting when I die.

If they're skived, you might be able to get a decent crimp. If they're unskived, I doubt it - at least with a folded crimp. Either way, I'd roll crimp. Works good and I like the looks of a roll-crimped shell.

Years ago I bought a bunch new of Alcan 3 in 12 ga. cases. I did get them loaded and fold crimped with an old Pacific 110 press. The trick is you just keep bumping the crimp starter until you the crimp well started. Do not try to take it down to far at a time. If you can find once fired cases it will be alot easier.
