Spanish Mauser questions
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:44:29 PM »
I recently bought a Spanish LaCoruna 1951 in 8 mm caliber.  My questions are:  Is it the same thing as the M98 German designed large ring, or some other odd ball configuration?  Also, the barrel is pretty much gone.  It was stored in a shed or something, outside was kind of rusty, inside looks like forty miles of bad road.  I've cleaned and swabbed on it for a couple of weeks, it still looks rough.  Will other military barrels fit, or will I be better served by just using the action to build a 35 Whelen?  I've wanted one of those for a while, any way.  It is kind of sad really, the wood, etc; is in decent shape, and all the numbers match.  I hoped the barrel would clean up, but it is really pitted, so I'm kind of on the fence as to what to do.  Advice?

Your La Coruna mauser 98 will accept standard large ring size mauser 98 barrels.  Your best bet is to find a military 98 8x57 barrel.

The problem is, rifles on this action from the La Coruna arsenal are noted for being soft.  I would avoid any high intensity cartridges for the rebarreling.  .30-06, 7x57, 8x57, .35 Whelen, etc should be fine.

Daniel:  I would say that, if you really want a 98 Mauser in 8mm and the La Corona you have is that rough, clean up the Corona and use it for trade fodder for a newer 98 in better shape.  If you want a really nice one, sort of pristine or used but unissued, check our sponsor Mid-South for their supply or contact Mitchell's Mausers for one of theirs.  HTH and JMTCW.  Mikey.

For what it's worth, I think I'm going to re-barrel this beast.  I want to go back with a military 8 mm barrel.  I don't feel right about passing this one on to some one else with it's bad barrel, and everything else is in decent shape, so to me at least, it's worth fixing.  Does anybody have a good bore barrel laying around that they would be willing to sell or trade?
