.45-70 G2 barrel shooting way too low
« on: February 29, 2008, 05:10:40 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have a very aggravating problem on my hands and hope someone can help.

I have a G2 with a 23" .45-70 barrel.  This was scoped at one time and shot 2 moa fairly often.  I took the scope off and replaced it with a Williams peep sight (the $30 model).  I then had a front sight ramp and fiber optic blade installed by a smith.  I placed the peep sight about midway up the rear ramp and took a few shots.  It shot about 2' low at 25 yards.  I ran the peep quite a ways up the ramp and shot more.  I shot and shot.  I ran the peep all the way up.  I shot more.  I shot different ammo, both reloads and factory.  The ammo grouped fine, but the highest I could get at 25 yards was about 16" low.  I measured the distance from the top of the barrel (Straight Bull Barrel) to the center of the peep and to the top of the front sight.  All measurements indicated that my bullets should be striking well over the bullseye at any range under 100 yards(the center of the rear peep was much higher that the top of the front sight blade).  I brought it back to the smith who also measured the above stated distances with the same conclusion as mine.  He stuck his bore sighter in it and it looked to be sighted a bit high at 100 yards.

I had my machinist buddy make a lower front sight blade which got my bullets to impact an inch or two low at 30 yards with the peep cranked all the way up .  You can now clearly see the height difference between the TOP of the front blade and the CENTER of the peep sight with the naked eye---it looks like the bullets should be four feet high at 100 yards!  I have had other guys shoot this thing with the same results.

I have always used the G2 muzzleloader forend on this carbine and do not think that is the problem (please correct me if I'm wrong).

There is no elevation adjustment left and it's still low at 30 yards!!!???  Yes.

I checked the barrel crown and bore for defects but found none.

I put in a call to T/C, but missed their "Anytime in the next 24 hours callback" >:(

Advice is welcome and Thank You in advance for it.

(I do not want to re-scope this outfit so please don't suggest that).

Sounds more like a gunsmith problem than a TC problem. Rear site up, shots go up. Rear site down shots go down.

Opposite for the front site.

I have a Encore with 45-70 barrel and Williams peep sights. Had the identical problem.
The gunsmith installed a low front sight and it still shot low.
Then I added .010 aluminum shim under the rear sight and this put me on at 100 yards, with elevation control to fine tune the sights.
It's a nice setup...

Thank you so much 35W!  I am glad to know I am not crazy and that this problem exists elsewhere.  I am planning to send it back to T/C and see what they say.  I hope the problem can be remedied one way or another.

Jeff,

I installed the .010 aluminum shim myself. The aluminum sheet is actually a printing press plate and I have enough to last a lifetime.
The gun smith did a grade B job installing the front sight, I am not happy with it.
My plan is to switch the front sight with one that a hood could be slid over, probably off a Marlin 1895. The hood would act as protection during hunting in wooded terrain or keep snow from building up on the leaf.
The rear sight looks fine and does not sit out of proportion higher than the rest of the barrel.
The stock is a Boyds l pepper laminate and the fore end opened up to accommodate a heavy barrel .223
Back to the 45-70, with the peep sight, it will hold 4 inch groups @ 100yards, using 54.0 gr of 3031 and 300 gr Sierra bullets. In my opinion, the accuracy is
"minute of whitetail"
At the range, it is a great plinker round out to 200 yards.
In your case, I don't think the TC tech department could do much other than install a custom front sight.
Let us know how the modification works.

35w,

Thanks for your response.  I will try to keep you informed on the outcome.
