Saltwater catfish?
« on: October 02, 2004, 05:25:40 AM »
My brother lives in Panama City Florida and fishes the bay around the city. He tells me that he has caught some hugh sailcats.(?) He says they look just like a catfish. I asked if they were good to eat and he said that the locals tell him no. Anybody know anything about these fish?

My brother also lives in that area. We trolled while sailing. We put the catfish on the BBQ and were not impressed with the taste at all.

I fished off that big pier off Panama City Beach and we caught truckloads of those catfish. The locals there told me they weren't fit to eat and even the Asian guys who were asking for nearly every other fish we caught we weren't keeping ourselves didn't want the catfish.

I lived around Lafitte La.  We called them "Gaf tops"  as opposed to the no good bloody flesh hard heads.
Seemed like regular fresh water cats, the big ones don't taste as good as the small ones.

Hardheads are fun to catch (isn't everything?) but no good to eat unless you're a shark.  They do make pretty good shark bait.  Gafftopsail cats aren't nearly as common as hardheads, but are pretty good to eat.  Also, if you'll set the filleted carcass on an anthill and let them clean off all the meat, right behind the head, you'll find a bone that looks like a crucifix; remove it and shake it, and it rattles like dice in a cup.

Yea the gaftops are good to eat, not the hardheads.
Gaftop has a large dorsil fin kinda looks like a sail.
you will catch 1-2 gaftops to 50 hardheads.
wish they would start making cat food out of hardheads they need to be thined on the
TX. coast LA. too i'm sure.
