H&R Model 155 45-70

I just acquired one and need load info if anyone has it.  These guns were made from 1972 to 1982 so I think the loads will have to be quite mild.  Thanks in advance.

That was my first H&R/NEF 45-70 and I really loved it.If you go to any of the reloading manuals .just stay in the trap door area and you will be fine.I used to load 3031powder and 405 grain bullets.  hth   Doug

Thanks Doug.  Before I buy all the 45-70 re-loading components, does anyone know of any factory ammo that can be fired in this gun.  I would like to shoot one box of factory loads before I invest.  I load for every caliber that I have but I have never loaded for a 45.  Thanks.

Just about any factory 45-70 ammo can be used in it short of the Buffalo Bore and Garrett ammo, they're all loaded to trapdoor pressures, the Federal, Remington and Winchester loads are the least expensive, save the brass!!  ;)

does the one you are talking about look like this 155 shikari 45/70 they where excellent guns i wish i had not sold mine.

Thank you guys.  I have always received great advice on this forum.  Yes, dodd3, my rifle looks exactly like that 155 except different sights.  Mine has a side mount receiver and a blade front.  Also it is in excellent condition.  It does not have the recoil pad.  Quickdtoo, I looked at a box of federal loads and they loaded 325 gr. speer bonded bullets at a premium price and I thought they might be hot so I didn't buy them.  I have checked my local suppliers, there are only 4, and none of them had any remington's, so it is either mail order or travel 100 miles.  I will do something soon because I can't wait to shoot it.

Even tho they have a high price, they're still loaded to trapdoor levels, those apparently have been discontinued tho, they only show the Power-shok ammo at 1850fps, which is in the same neighborhood as Win and Rem 300gr ammo. Midsouth has the current lower velocity Hornady 45-70 ammo, but it's not the best for reloading since the brass is shorter.

Wisconsin has ammo for $24 a box, $23.50 if you buy two.

Quickdtoo, thanks again for the info.  I added them to my favorites.  I am sure these loads would be fine but my lyman 47th edition lists 300 gr maximum velocities of 1500 to 1600 fps for this gun.  I will probably use this ammo after I get more familiar with the caliber.  Right now I am just a little gun shy because I have never had any experience with this type of firearm.  All of my reloading and shooting has been with modern firearms with the exception of my two muzzleloaders.  With the guidance I have received from you guys with much more experience than me I will get through this and finally shoot the gun.  Again, thank you.

Lyman is very conservative with their data, Hodgdon and Hornady put the max trapdoor pressure at the SAAMI limit of 28kcup, but you can always load it up a liitle more from Lyman's data if you want a little better performance, but the 45-70 is fun as long as the recoil is tolerable, the lighter loads being the most fun for everyone. ;)

I'll second that! Years ago I had a Ruger #3 carbine which I loaded really heavy, 300 grain bullets up to 2400 fps and 400 grains going 2000 fps and Man oh Man did that little bugger kick! Even with a slip on recoil pad it was just brutal. I was thirty years younger then and now I don't find that sort of recoil to be much fun at all. My current 45/70 is a Shakari with 28" barrel just as Dodd3 pictured and my normal loads now are 300 grain bullets, either Remington JHPs or Laser Cast FNs and I run them at 1300-1600 fps. That seems to be my present threshold for "comfortable" recoil. Comfortable loads put the fun back into shooting and still do anything I need done out to 100 yards and I'm "comfortable" with that restriction.

I'd get the Remington 405 grain factory loads.  They are the only factory loads I'll use.
