Question about Dies
« on: September 14, 2003, 12:55:36 PM »
I have a set of RCBS 7MM BAR dies. What is the difference in those and a reglular set of RCBS Full Length 7MM dies? Can i use the BAR dies to load for my Remington 700 BDL? Thanks.

Question about Dies

I think the Midwaycatalog states that RCBS full length dies should not be used for bolt rifles. They ststed to use them in lever guns, pumps and autoloaders. Something about setting the shoulder back a bit more.

But then that makes me wonder why a factory load will chamber in anything without a problem.

Maybe a way to sell more dies?

Tnscooter :  I am not familar with the 7mm bar dies you have I own 7-08/ 7x57 / 7mag / and the 280 7mm exp dies and none of them are interchangable as to different calibers in the 7 mm range.  With that said if you have a set of small base dies in a specific caliber yes you can use them in a bolt action rem 700 not the best but it can work most auto loaders require a small base die for them.  I would need a little more info on the specific dies you have such as cal. or manufacturer model # and then I could look them up in their catalog.  JIM    Bama Boy I havent seen the midway catalog you are refering to but doublew check it to see if the article said something to the effect that small base dies are for the pump / lever / and auto loaders as full length and neck sizing dies are for bolt actions like bread and butter.  JIM

I don't know what the BAR die are, but there are small base dies for autoloaders.  I believe that they are made for tight tolernece all the way down the brass for correct feeding in autoloader and pumps where leverage can be a problem.  Conact RCBS with your dies number and they can help.
