What year was the 10/22 first produced?

When did  they start putting plastic butt plates on them instead of metal?

How much would a 10/22 in decent shape (plain wood stock, plastic butt plate), used but not abused, be worth from a private party?

"When did  they start putting plastic butt plates on them instead of metal?" Not sure as I have not seen a metal butt plate on one. My first 10/22 was bought in the mid 80's and it had a plastic butt plate.

As they sell for 180.00 to what ever (depending on options) I would say a factory rifle in good condition would get 100-150 depending on how much the present owner was attached to it.... They may not "blue book" for that amount but there is quite a market for them and you don't see many 10/22's  in dealer racks, used and  in good condition staying there long.

I know for a fact that at least in 1976 they had the metal buttplates. A friend has one.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I bought mine in 1970 and it has a metal butt plate, and a pretty walnut stock. A friend wants rid of her 10/22 (no good reason why, except that she's a hardcore Democrat. That tells me the Dems are going to make another run on our guns when they win the election!). It's been shot some, but mostly it's laid around on a shelf for years. No rust, very few scratches in wood. This one is obviously much newer than mine.

Bought mine in 1965 and it has a metal butt plate.

I paid her $100 for it. I tore it down and cleaned it up, then took it out and shot it at cans and bottles. It functioned perfectly, never a jam (Federal bulk ammo from Walmart) with about 100 rounds. Accuracy was good too, as far as I could tell. No can or bottle survived the test. I sure hate the open sights on it tho. This rifle is obviously designed to have a scope. It's almost impossible for me to scrunch my face down onto the stock enough to line up the open sights properly.

I see a set of "Firesights" at Cabela's for the 10/22. They look like they are a bit taller than the original sights on the rifle. Has anybody ever tried these sights?
