Who makes over-sized laminated wood stock blanks?
« on: May 22, 2003, 05:17:45 AM »
I am making Ferguson rifles. Thickness at breech requires stock blank to be at least .250 inch thicker -- about 2.750 inches thick minimum.

Who makes laminated rifle stock blanks this thick?

More particulars include:

1. I prefer more than 16 laminations per inch.

2. I prefer laminated walnut or laminated maple. The last time I did this I used laminated birch because that was all I could find at 2.750 inches thick.

3. I prefer not to mix woods in a Zebra effect. Results wanted are that the finished and stained stock closely resembles walnut.

Naphtali,
have you considered laminating your own from 1/16 inch venier?
not a lot of tooling required and you could precision cut the layers berfore layup.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources

Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.

PaulS:

Thanks for the response. I have my hands full with the other stuff. BUT . . .

I found something that may be too good to be true. I put in my query to http://www.scopeusout.com/ who offer laminated blanks, with fifty laminations per inch, of an African wood. Through stained, it has acceptable coloring on screen.

Blanks are ungodly expensive. I do not have a comparison of weight for this with sixteen laminations per inch birch, and European Walnut.

Assuming it is not too heavy because of excessive adhesive, I suspect hardness of wood is irrelevant. The "wood" would be adhesive with wood filler. And were I to want it, checkering circa 1770-1810 was perhaps 7 lpi and square shaped. Softness would not be a factor.

If money becomes too much of a factor, I would create a temporary fix with less expensive laminated wood, and incorporate pillars at wood-to-metal disassembly points.

Surprisingly, I have found no manufacturer, or reseller, who offers laminated walnut or laminated maple. I suspect I could have special blanks made, but situation reverts to unglodly expensive where I may have a superior solution.

Maybe you could try to contact Rutland Plywood in Rutland, Vermont. They make the lamintaed blanks for all of the big manufacturers, and probably most of the small semi-custom shops. Another place to look would be Wenig Custom Gunstocks www.wenig.com Hope this helps somehow. Sean

Sean:

Rutland's a source I've used in the past. Their largest is 2.50 inches.

Wenig cannot help.

I got a reply from scopeuseout.com. Here it is:
Quote
The two colors of Obeche that you would be interested in are my dark and
light Obeche. Both I have laminated with .020 plys and each layer is laid up
on a 90 degree bias that adds enormous strength and maintains very light
weight because of the lightweight of the Obeche to start with.
The very thin plys are also very good for color saturation and the color is
100% color fast and zero fading. The stock in Obeche is 10% lighter than the
same stock in Rutland laminate. The Rutland birch is .075 plus and never
100% color fast from piece to piece.

My wood is only available in 2.5" thickness because of the way my log is
laid out for my stocks. One log is over $9000. to my mill in my layout and I
cut it that way to use the entire log.I do stocks with 3" and 5" forends and
glue the strips on my forend and you cannot see the glue line at all.
Granite is hard but it only takes a slight blow to chip and crack it. The
Obeche, we have stocked many very heavy recoiling dangerous game rifles with
as well as a few 50 cal. BMG target rifle without the first problem of lug
set-back when bedded correctly.
Hope I have answered all your questions.

Lighter than conventional laminated birch. Hmmm.
