whats everybody hunting now that deer is over?
« on: January 06, 2008, 01:20:40 PM »
So what is everybody hunting now that deer season is over?  I was invited to a rabbit hunt but for me personally the snow is just too deep.  After this week or warmer temps and the snow settles down maybe then.  I was at the range this weekend and shot the 7-08 encore trying out some new loads.  Otherwise work is keeping me extremely busy. There are supposed to be 6 people in my office and we have 2 right now. The overtime is sure flowing. I think I see a new barrel in my future maybe a pistol barrel and a frame and grips maybe a scope who knows.

To keep myself busy, I've been reloading ammo, and thinking of trying some of those handloads on the local coyote population on my hunting grounds. I like rabbit hunting too, but, like you, I am not into walking in thigh-deep snow for them.

On 12/31 I took a coyote call and my .22 Hornet out to a small area that I hunted for deer in the fall.  When deer hunting, there were plenty of deer and coyote tracks.  On the 31'st there was nothing except 1 day-old deer track.  It's like everything went south for the winter!

Saturday I went out in the afternoon, saw some tracks, but only saw a squirrel, crows, and a hawk, all on the other side of a canal.  I would have shot one of the crows, but they didn't land.  Maybe the next time I go there I'll take the Savage combo gun.

I'd really love to shoot coyotes, but they don't give me any respect.  I may have to wait for woodchucks.  It's too bad that there are no dumps, rat shooting was a blast (pun intended).

I was hoping for one more chance at geese this past weekend but that didn't happen. Will probably take my son out for squirrels a few times this winter and will probably try to give it a try for coyotes a few times. Other than that I'll be counting down to spring turkeys!

A friend and I did some scouting last Sunday for wild boar.  Hopefully we'll have some luck when we actually start hunting them.  Still looking for more information on them. ;D

 Woodchkhunter;

    You haven't really done fun rat hunting until you have done it with terriers ! I used to have Jack Russells, and when not after chucks, fox or coon, i would sometimes help neighbors with rat infested hen houses etc.

    Go to youtube.com  and do a search for   ratting   or  ratters   ..there are some good videos there that were produced in the UK..real interesting !

      ..A good place to start..    www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzayWDwa5EE&feature=related

   Youthpastor;

   Hogs are headed our way !
     In a "special double issue", The December/January 2007 issue of OUTDOOR LIFE had an excellent article on the subject. The article starts; " For three days last May, roughly 150 of the nation's top hog experts-among them biologists representing 26 of the 30 states with confirmed breeding populations of free ranging swine-converged on Mobile Ala., to discuss every facet of the ecological evil posed by feral pigs."

     Biologist Billy J. Higgenbotham stated.." There are only two kinds of states in America..the ones that have wild hogs now and those that will be plagued by them very soon."

   Hogs, according to the article, are as much a curse as they are a blessing..very destructive. On the bright side, this may offer we hunters a bit of "job security"...LOL
