357 MAX Help Please!
« on: March 08, 2008, 10:10:02 AM »
I purchased a 10" 357 Maximum barrel Wednesday.  I don't want to sound stupid but can I use 357 Mag dies with some special adjustments to load the Max? I also need some brass.  Maybe even a favorite load or two.
Thanks, Mark

I use a 180 grain XTP. 20 grains of H4227. Small Rifle Primers(Win)    You bought the right combination to kill deer/hog out to 100 yards!  Love my Max.....  Fun to shoot!   With the right bullet placement it will kill deer where they stand. Minimal tracking is needed....found all my deer 5 to 10 yard from where I shot!     Enjoy!

In about a week I will receive my MGM 18" SS barreled Max. Looking forward to shooting it. i have about 3,500 Win. 158 JHP bullets, so that is what I will be shooting out of mine. Probably use H110 powder.

For a flatter trajectory and increased power on target, the Hornady 180 SSP bullet works great in a 10" Maxi.  A hunting partner took several caribou with that bullet and a near-max load of H110. The 180 Speer is a harder bullet and will give deeper penetration than will the Hornady.  Some 158-grain bullets are a bit too soft for Maxi velocities, choose them carefully.

I think Remington still makes loaded ammo for the Maximum but I don't know any sources for just brass. Maybe someone else can give some info on that.
My favorite load for the max is a Speer 180 35 cal flat nose rifle bullet, loaded with 23 grains of H110, CCI400 primer, seated to the cannelure for an overall length of 2.15".
This is the most accurate load I have ever fired in every one of the Maximum chambered firearms I have tried it in.It will cloverleaf at 50 yards and it remains above the speed of sound past reasonable hunting ranges (125 yards).

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

I like a load of AA1680 with 200 or 210 cast bullets at about 1350fps.  I use a WSR primer.  Very accurate to 200 meters.

AA1680 or Surplus W680 are THE powders to use for the Maxi. Unless you have a problem getting these two I would not bother with any others.

Great deer round. I am currently shooting Hornady 180 gr. SSP bullets with Hodgen Lil Gun powder. Previously used 296 or 4227 powder. I hunt with a 16" bull barrel in a Contender. Accuracy is 1 1/2" @ 100 yards  (three shots) with the above mentioned load.  The last deer I shot with it was a doe @ 168 yards. Clean kill with a double lung shot. Bullets performance was good with complete penetration and adequate expansion. I used this load many years ago when I hunted with a 10" contender. Also used Sierra 158gr bullets in the 10" Contender out to 100 yards. Good shooting!
