SKS recoil compared to AR-15?
« on: January 29, 2008, 10:21:27 AM »
Can anyone give me some sort of comparison of these two?  I'm looking to get an SKS but have never shot one.  My friend has an AR15 and was amazed and the low felt recoil (compared to my .204 H&R).

Please let me know how they compare if anyone has experience for both.

Thanks!

The SKS is a very mild recoil rifle. It will have slightly more recoil than an AR but not a whole lot.It certainly is not uncomfortable to shoot.I would liken it to a 30-30.

the SKS has a very heavy bolt and spring and the recoil is a slow recoil not the quick snap of a fixed breech gun .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

The SKS is a heavier rifle with a heavier caliber but the weight absorbs some of the recoil so that the SKS and the ARs in 223 are about on par with recoil.

One difference that leads to different levels of felt recoil is the stock design.  The SKS still wears a WWII style carbine stock - short length of pull, straight stock, traditional straight grip design - this has a tendency to send the recoil straight back.  It is not a heavy recoil but in that design is not very controllable at all if it ever goes full auto.  The AR family also has a straight stock but the pistol grip adds great controllability as does the larger forearm which always seemed to me to give me more to hang onto when in full auto.

A SKs is a good fun gun to shoot and even dress for hunting but then so is the AR system in some of the available caliber offerings.  I doubt however that you will ever find a SKS that shoots as well as the AR sytems do.  HTH and JMTCW.  Mikey.

It depends on the ammo. to some degree.  I have only shot 123 grain bullets out of my SKS, so I can't speak to the recoil of the 150 grain loads.  On the other hand, heavy  bullet loads in the .223 are about 70 grains and loaded to a considerably higher velocity.  From a money standpoint, you could trick out an SKS with about every add-on designed for it and still not come close to the price of a new AR.  This would make up for differences in stock design. though, since I use my SKS for bad weather deer hunting, the short stock is made up for by the added clothes.  Recoil is just not a factor with either rifle, which is one of the reasons for their popularity.  Of course, to my way of thinking, the way to go is to own one of each. and make your own comparisons.  I just checked factory ballistics, and the comparison to the .30-30 is very appropriate, since all three cartridges operate at the same energy level, 1600 to 1900 foot-pounds at the muzzle.  To me, felt recoil is heavier in a Winchester 94 than in a SKS or an AR, but that may just be the difference in lever action versus semi-auto.

i was given a box of  wolf 154 gr 7.62 x 39 the recoil in my mini 30 wasn't much more than the 123 gr.
the AR is a fine rifle but maintenance is a concern . the SKS is a tuff gun that can survive with less care . you can have several sks rifles for the price of an AR . i had one and wish i had not traded it .
this is in no way a cut to the AR , the Ar is a race  car and the SKS is like a tractor
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Biggest difference is in accuracy. My AR will shoot at or under 1/2 inch groups all day long at 100 yards and accurate enough to use on vermin at 300 yards. Now my Russian sks will shoot around 2 inches at one hundred with some ammo, others not. At 300 its difficult to get the groups under 12 inches. Don't get me wrong, the sks is a hoot to shoot. Just don't expect much in down range accuracy.
