Snaring coyotes...couple of questions
« on: February 23, 2008, 12:10:28 AM »
Coyotes don't get overly large here in Arkansas, as the weather doesn't get very cold(for long).
Will a #2 snare do the job, or should I just get the #6?
Can the "deer stops" be moved without damaging the snare cable?  If so, how?

How many of you bother snaring coyotes?  And what have you found to be the best to do the job....

Coyotes are valued at $50.00 alive and ready to run in southeastern Arkansas.  I know a leg hold is probably going to yield higher numbers, but they club will not take them if they have bad feet.  The hides aren't worth a lot due to the warmer weather.  We have a lot of them on the lease and trapping for them runs through mid-April(longer with a depredation tag from AGFC).

I have never tried to keep coyotes alive in snares. For me the quicker their dead the better, less destruction of the snare site.I like 10 foot long snares in 3/16' or 5/54 7X7 aircraft cable.Grawes bullet locks,BMI's or Ambergs all with Amberg release ferrules.I don't have to use stops.I like 10 inch loops,10 inches off the ground dead center in the trail.Sorry this probably wasn't much help.

I have no Idea what a#2 or #6 snare is--and I make and sell snares, sounds like something from Thompson.
With Coy's snare set up,he is going for a kill type snare. And a snare that long will more than likely cause entanglement and a dead coyote.
Moving a deer stop is probably fruitless.
You want a snare set in a no entanglement situation.I just made some restraints for a customer in MO., that wants them for the live trade.

Thanks!

What about dye?  Do I use the same stuff as I treated my leg hold traps with?
Seems they need to have something done to them....stainless look would be out of place.

Believe it or not some snarers dont do anything to thier snares , just set them and they catch a fair amount of canines.   I wouldnt suggest boiling.... it takes out lubricants that are inside the cable and it can rust from insside out and  cause weakness to  cause breaking.... Some guys  paint them or dip... I just put outside and let weather in rain and sun and they turn grey color and work just fine... its up to you to pick which method you want.. Like i said  i wouldnt boil them...  Good luck.

I do boil my snares,if I remember or have time in baking soda and water. It takes the oil smell off the cable and gives them a dull gray color. As for non entanglement.I snare lots of coyotes in short grass pastures with no brush or entanglement. It's the type of lock and length of cable that kills them,in my experience.I think snares would be a poor choice for live catches.

Coy,thats why some states have their cable restraints.Large Reichardt lock with a 180 degree reverse bend, stops and swivels.Without going down and reading one of my reg books, most allow a 5 footer, entanglement situations are a no-no.
Just made up a couple dozen that are headed for Mo. today--guy wants them for live market yotes.

Tom   The guys I know that have done lots of live market fox and coyotes all use soft catch legholds on a 24 hour trap check. They collectively have caught thousands of coyotes and fox for the live market. It's against the law in Montana to trap and sell coyotes and fox for the live market.I did catch a young coyote by hand one summer by it's den.But that is another story. SDB, if you check out the Missouri Trappers board, we have some guys who could probably put you in touch with one of the teachers of the Missouri cable restraint class.
