Care for neoprene waders
« on: February 04, 2008, 10:13:56 AM »
Other than hanging up neoprene waders upside down, for example from a boot hanger, what other care is useful to extend the life of neoprene waders?  I have Cabela's 5 MM Magnum Waders.  I have read that the feet and legs should be stuffed with newspaper.  Does anyone do this and does it make a difference?  I have read that you should spray AmourAll on the outsides of the waders.  Is that helpful to preserve the neoprene?  I have my waders hanging upside down in a boot hanger in my garage.  It is dry in there but likely to get hot in the North Texas summers.  I tried to get approval from my wife to install the wader hanger in the cool of our closet, but the wife said no dice.

Where ever you store them, keep sunlight off them, UV will destroy them more than anything else over time. I store mine in the dark in the basement on a boot dryer.  ;)

I've been able to wear out one set of hip boots and am well into wearing out a second pair by wearing through the soles rather than tears or splits somewhere above the soles, and for me that is the definition of making them last.  At the end of duck season I wash them then I rub them down with Armorall and store them out of any direct light.  Before I used this type of care I always developed leaks long before I wore through the soles.

Thanks for the info.  I will wash them, treat with armorall, and hang them up.  I live in Texas and hang my waders in the garage where it will get hot in summer.  I would prefer to hang them in my closet in the cooler air, but my wife is against that.  I guess I'll just be comforted by the thought that I have done what is in my power to care for and extend the life of these waders and just buy a new pair when needed, even if their life is somewhat shortened by the exposure to summer heat.  In any case they are not immortal, and I will ultimately need to replace them.

I stick mine under the bed during off season.  It is nice and dark and temperature controlled.  I also put baby powder in them to absorb any residual moisture.

Give that a try.
