Savage 340 range report

The little 340 30-30 is a sleeper. Handloads of 130 gr Speer flat points over 35grs of H-335. Last 2 shots I had loaded were touching at the 100 yd mark. One group is 3 shots literally touching. Amazing gun. Took me a few shots to get her where I wanted but it was worth it.

I've got a 340 in .222 and it is a great shooter even with the 400# trigger.  That's the only thing I don't like about mine.  Did you do anything to the trigger group (i.e. anything yourself or gunmithed)?

My trigger is not bad, I did glass bed the action and float the barrel up till the barrel band then I backed that off to very light pressure. I may work on the trigger a bit now that I found the way it shoots. I don't know if these old eyes can do any better than I am now. I have a Nikon 2 x 7 scope on it. My gunsmith has 5 of these and 2 are .222's, he says they can outshoot anything he has. Weird huh? Cheap, ugly but man can they shoot.

These Savage 340's are great shooters. I have wrote about my 222 several times on this sight. I only have a 6x Leupold on mine, but it has outshot many a more expensive rifle at many turkey shoots years ago. I left alot of men scratching there head after they got outshot by such an ugly rifle.

I have a 340 in 30-30.  Someone gave it to me.  It flooded in a hurricane so I parkerized it and refinished the stock.  I drilled and tapped it for a scope but never got around to shooting it.  I'm not a big fan of bolt actions especially in 30-30.  As soon as I come across someone who wants to start hunting and doesn't have a gun.  I am going to give them a present.

stumpjmpr, you're the man! I have done that very same thing with much more expensive rifles and shotguns. Gave away about $2K worth of guns to my grandsons, should have seen their eyes light up. I'm 66 yrs old, hunted and shot all my life, have owned $10K Perazzi's and $200 Mossberg's, been there done that. Get my kicks helpin the youngins, I'll shoot a few oldie types and play golf. All good.
