.243 superlite question
« on: March 15, 2008, 02:33:06 PM »
I just purchased a .243 superlite for my grandson. Could anyone save me some time and money by giving me some advice? He wants to use it for deer. What factory loads shoot OK in the 20 inch barrel. I also reload, so what hand loads work in this barrel. Any info will be greatly appreciated. I don't need a tackdriver. 2inches or less at 100 yds. will be great. ???
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

The 243 in super lite can be one of the most finicky barrels. Make sure you let the barrel cool between shots. The Super Lites heat up very quickly affecting your point of aim. In a hunting situation you will be shooting from a cold barrel so let it cool down good between shots so that when you are shooting "groups" you simulate a hunting situation. Of course you will want to use a hunting bullet even in your hand loads so that you will know exactly where the bullet is going to hit. No 2 guns will like the same load, so you are going to have to experiment a little. Pick out a likely load/s from your loading manuals and give it a try. There are tips to improve the accuracy in the FAQ section above if you try some hand loads and can not get anything to work. Read the FAQ anyway to learn about how to shoot a Handi. Like making sure the latch and lug are oil free, snapping the action shut so that it seats the same each time, pulling the trigger back all the way and hold until after the shot. When I am shooting a Handi, I hold the trigger back until after the shot and then release the trigger, I can hear it "click" when I release it. Good luck and good shooting :)

Laotto222 is right, any heat in the barrel at all will change the way it shoots. Read the FAQ's for accurizing tips. ;) My daughters youth Handi .223 has the same barrel as a superlight and I had to "work" on it (use the accuracy helps in the FAQ's)to get it to shoot good.

95 grain ballistic tip over 35 grains of IMR 4064 produces 2700 fps, light recoil, tight groups and 5 dead deer with 5 shots.  My kids enjoy shooting it at 7 and 10 years old and only 55-62 lbs.
If it Feels Good, Shoot it Again!!!!
