win88 The model 14 had fixed sights the 14-2 is a newer model of the 14 with minor modifications. Here is a thread just down on the first page.

I believe the model 14 would have a porkchop barrel shroud with a recessed nut.  The 14-2 would have the straight barrel shroud and recessed nut.

Pork chop refers to the tang of metal on the shroud that extended down the front of the frame too the trigger guard, with the short lug barrels, it looked like a pork chop with the bone protruding.  They were only produced for a few years and the shrouds arent interchangeable with any of the other production runs; as are the standard shrouds.

Here's a link to a Gunbroker auction for a Model 12.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=93599807

The picture shows the gun and an extra porkchop barrel.  You can clearly see the thin section of metal that extends vertically from the rear of the shroud.  A Model 14 would have this "porkchop" extension but a Model 14-2 would not.  The later "-2" guns eliminated the porkchop extension.

As far as finish goes, I rarely see a refinished Dan Wesson.  The factory finish looks blue-black to me.  Without a very good photo we could only speculate as to whether the finish on the DW you are looking at is factory or not.  Dan Wesson .357 revolvers are not big collector's items yet so I don't know that there is a big premium on having a factory finish anyway, at least at this time.

The Model 14's in particular are often stepchildren because they have fixed sights.  I had a model 14-2  with a 6" barrel that I was able to pick up for $175 from a frustrated seller because he couldn't get anywhere near the $300 he was asking.  I think the combination of the 6" barrel and fixed sights killed its marketablility.

The model 14's have a duller flat finish.
