DIRTY 45 acp loads
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:50:29 PM »
Gents,
I have loaded in the past , been mostly 357 revolver , riffle and contender loading . never had this problem before.
I loaded up 100 + 45 acp loads, win case win primer(std pistol) 4.4 grains of Hodgen Clays topped off with a 200 grain cast bullet.
I went bulls-eye class last night and when I got through my hands were filthy black.
I used the clays because I have a 5 lb jug of it left over from my son shooting on the trap team in H.S.
Have any of you guys shot bullseye or just shot a bunch of 45acp with other powders that were cleaner, Thanks for reading
Neal

I have shot a bunch of 45ACP in a session with 6 grains of W231 under 230 grain LRN.  This is a fairly clean powder but with the lube on the cast bullets any load will be a little smokey, but your hands shouldn't be black as if you changed dirty oil in your truck.  My hands will have a llittle black soot on them but far from shooting a really dirty powder in a handgun, and I have had my hands totally black from dirty loads before.

guns are dirty especially with cast bullets as most of the filth will be from bullet lube. Just a fact of life and if your going to shoot cast bullet you need to live with it. theres no magic powder thats going to keep your gun clean. Either switch to jacketed bullets or hose it off once in a while with some brake clean.
