Tikka Turvey ??
« on: July 12, 2003, 04:38:36 PM »
I gotta Tikka Problem!! :?
I am about to purchase another Tikka for my B-Day, and I don't quite know which one. It will be synthetic, probably blue but I have not figured out which calibre??
I have a Syn/Blu 243 that is a shooter so my question is: a 223, 7-08, 308 or an 06 (25 or 30). I load the 243 and shoot 80gr and 100gr Sierra bullets so I will load for what ever I buy. The 223 could be my new varmit gun and ammo is cheap over the counter, to break it in and make some brass. I do like my short actions, which would be covered by the 7-08 or 308.  The only wooden Tikka I would buy is the Continental Varmit in a heavy barrel 223.  Maybe a stainless syn 223 Whitetail Hunter w/Nikon or Bush/Elite glass.
BTW: I do kill a lot of paper too.

I am taking suggeation so let me hear what you have to say.

Thanks,
Randy

I am a real 7M-08 fan.  I just got this caliber in a barrel for my Thompson Encore.  But along with my Tikka in 243 , the 7M-08 would be my next choice for medium game and paper punching.  For small game or paper punching I would opt for the 223.  Guess it depends on which way you are leaning.  In the Tikka (unlike my Encore) the 7M-08 should be light on the shoulder and a real joy to shoot ( like my son's 7M-08 in his Remington 700 LSS mountain rifle ).  I would consider the Tikka Delux though for any caliber. 8)

The 7mm-08 is one of my favorite cartridges, and the Tikka is one of my favorite rifles, and the Whitetail Hunter is my favorite model of Tikka rifles.

If you want a rifle for big game hunting (but necessarily too big, and not necessarily at really long ranges), then the 7mm-08 is it.  You mentioned the Tikka blue/synthetic.  Go to, if I remember correctly, gunbroker or auctionarms - there is a blue/synthetic for $399 - that is a great price.

If you want a rifle simply to punch paper, then the .223 is it.  Ammo is cheap and everywhere, and recoil is, well, nonexistent.  You mentioned getting a heavy barreled rifle - go to gunsamerica - I saw a Tikka Varmint in .223 for about $500 - this is also the lowest price that I have seen.  (If you don't buy it - I WILL. )  I think that this would be a perfect gun to take to the range on slow weekends.  Just go out there, shoot 50 to 100 rounds, and simply have fun.
