280 Ruger #1 load safe for 280 Handi?
« on: March 19, 2008, 11:44:58 AM »
Last fall my #1 & 223 Survivor were stolen from my camper while I was whitetail hunting with my Rem 260.
I know #1 action is stronger than a Handi ...my #1 load was 53.0 grains IMR 4350 w/Hornady 162 bullets.
This load was from'95 Hodgen manual.
Would this load be to much for a 280 handi?
Thank you in advance

That is a pretty warm load. I would start over at some where around 45 grains and work your way back up. A Handi should be able to handle full power loads, but every gun is different, even one #1 to the next #1 can be different. Throat lengths may be different between the #1 and a Handi causing case capacity issues and/or pressure spikes (or lack of pressure spikes) because of the distance to the lands. You need to basically start over with load development simply because it is a different gun, not because it is a Handi. just my 2 cents

Thank you for your reply. Ihave a handi 280 on order and will start over.
It is just that I have 30 rounds loaded per above post.
Heck..thats the fun part of reloading anyway...finding what works best.
Thanks again

I would pull those 30 rounds down and start over just to be safe. You can use the bullet pulls for sighting in and load development. BTW Sorry to hear about loosing two fine fire arms to some dirty low down varmint. I do not have any room in my heart for a thief. >:(
