New Guy with his first TC
« on: April 16, 2008, 03:00:43 AM »
Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and a new G2 owner.  My name is Ray.

I have wanted a TC contender since I was in High School over 20 years ago. Well, when at the Tulsa Gun Show I bought a .357 Herrett super 14" barrel.  I could no longer resist the urge. When I got home I ordered a blued pistol frame with wood grip and forend.

One of the things that has kept me from buying one sooner was that goofy cat laser etching on the sides.  Being an engraver by trade, I found that a lot less than desirable.  With the new G2 contender they did away with that nonsense and I now own one.

The contender has had an appeal to me for several reasons.

1. I have always had sort of a natural draw to handguns over rifles and shotguns (I do still like a good accurate rifle though).

2. Growing up the son of a varmint and bench rest shooter, I have an interest in wildcat loads, (how barrel length affects them, how to use them for max velocity and accuracy, etc).

3. I was raised with a "one shot one kill" philosophy for hunting so I tend to like single shot firearms.

4. I liked the idea of their versatility.  I mean this is the ultimate survival gun.  One action and a rimfire barrel for small game and a larger barrel for large game.  You have two guns that still weigh less than one good quality rifle.

5. Now they have a nice engravable surface ready and waiting for me.  ;D

Now that I own one I can't wait to load up some hand loads to try out that 357 herrett barrel  (I also recently ordered a 17mkII barrel I found on sale in one of my dealer catalogs).   I am already thinking of how I want to design the custom wood and the engraving.  8)

Welcome, Ray, from another new owner.

I just bought my first contender last weekend, in much the same manner as you did. I had my first barrel in hand before I had a frame.  For me, however, the first barrel is the 17M2 that I found on sale, and I managed to find a decently priced older contender at a local shop with a .22LR barrels.  Wildcats are yet to come.

I look forward to seeing what you do with that blank slate.  As I have no such talent, I went for the already engraved unit because I thought the G2 was too plain. I guess that can be fixed!

Welcome top Contenders and welcome to GBO.    Both are addictive.  Be sure to ask any questions you may have.  There is a host of experience here on the forum, and lots of opinions.

I am finding that out.  I already have two or three contender / encore projects planned.

I am also saving for a couple super 14 barrels in 221 fireball and 7MM TCU for the frame I have now.

Ray,

You state that you are a varmint and bench-rest shooter...I think that you will find the Contender to be one of the best there is as far as pistols go for those purposes.  I have a 14" .222 Rem. barrel that will out shoot most of my rifles (as far as accuracy is concerned) with the proper handloads.  I've killed groundhogs here in PA at up to over 400 yards, and I'm no pro.  You certainly be pleased.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

 Hi Ray,
Okay, I'll make excuses for goofy cat, it isn't all that well done. So impress us and show a photo. Who knows, you may get some business here.  I started collecting the Contender after finding a silhouette range and meeting the shooters there. By the way, in open sights, the Contender only needs 4 clicks up to make 100 meters from 40 meters. That's in .22 long rifle. If you haven't tried it out with a smallbore, those open sights are no joke. The pistol is extremely accurate. The only variables are trigger pull and the shooter.
 Kinda challenging, huh?

Hello, Ray, and welcome to the club! I have a G2, with a 45/410 and 6.8 Remington barrel. Most of the time, the 45/410 barrel is attached and several 3-inch #7-1/2 loads are available. I find it an excellent truck gun, to take care of snakes and vermin around areas in which I work. The 6.8 is a medium range round without a lot of recoil and noise.

Hi Ray
Welcome to the forum although I feel sorry for you   as you will find that you cannot own one or two. Like the rest of us one leads to many more and a larger gun volt and custom stocks :) :) :)
