Can you take a thermacell into Canada ?
« on: January 23, 2008, 10:59:16 AM »
I've read some prettty unsettling stuf about this and how much the fuel costs.
I always drive to Manitoba. My wife bought me one for my next trip. Now I'm worried I can't take one in a car.

My Canadian outfitter is the one who told me to buy a ThermoCell before getting into camp. Before that I didn't even know what it was. When crossing the border from Maine, I have never been asked if I had a ThermoCell and they knew I was entering the country to hunt bear. I'm sure that they are legal in Canada.

You can normally by ThermoCells and related supplies on Ebay for less money. I did.

Seeing that I don't really like thousands of biting insects, I also bought a full bug suit.  Either or both are essential for spring bear hunting.

What's a ThermoCell?  I've never used one, but I'm interested in anything that keeps bugs off of me.

Do those things put any unnatural scent into the air?

I dunno if they put any scent into the air, but I've had bears come really close without seeming to take notice.  Rev

Commercials I've seen on TV say they don't....but i've never tested it.

If it really does keep bugs away it's worth its weight in gold.  I've never used one and I'd hesitate to while on a bear stand.  I might have to get one of these and give it a shot to see for myself.

I've used them for years and have never seen them spook game.  On the other hand, my swatting black flies and mosquitoes would definitely spook game!  I would not bear hunt in the north country without one.  I think you'll like it.  Rev

I'll take your word for it and try one out sometime.  You guys have me convinced and it doesn't take much for me to try out the latest and greatest bug killer.

While in the bear camp many hunters who were using the Thermocell killed bears. These were baited hunts with many bait sites that were within 20 yds of the stand. I'm guessing that the keen sense of smell that a bear has can easily pick up the scent of a Thermocell. However, it oviously is not alarming to them.

I used the Thermocell in the fall just as some biting insects started to bite my hands and neck. Within 2 minutes of firing that Thermocell up I was bug free until I got out of the stand.Like a previous poster stated, when the bugs are biting you'll be swatting.

Since so many Thermocell users are hunting bears maybe they can make a bug repellent that is also a bear attractant? You know - like a honey burn scent or something.

I like the idea of another bear attractant, but just not on me.  Your hearts in the right place, but I don't want to smell too good.

Interesting point.

The outfitter told us that one of his hunters (several years prior) had shot a bear that was climbing up the treestand ladder while the hunter was in the stand.  :o I'm guessing that he was probably eating his lunch at the time.  ;D

Great question about the black flies.  I've read so many good reports about thermacells that I bought one with a holster and a couple of the refill packages.

Yes - that is what it is primarily recommended for.

I took one with me last year to Ontario on my black bear hunt, if the bear smelled it, it was to late. I shot him.  ;D

I talked with this years guide about the thermacells and he said they work and that if you have one bring it.  He said they cause health problems and that they were legal in the US before they were approved in Canada.  I didn't know about the health problems.

I guess when the insect repellent on the pad when heated puts off some kind of unhealthy fumes. I would not put it directly under you, but off to the side were it can disperse it fumes.

That's pretty much what I've been planning on.  I'm waiting for the bugs to get bad around here so I can test it out.  Hasn't happened yet and I'm not complaining.

We have a ton of bugs here in Delaware and the thermacell works like a champ. I use it all the time and the mosquitos stay away.

I don't know about being unhealthy for people but it is clearly unhealthy and often fatal for bears!  ;D
