.22 Tool

Once again I turn to the gun gurus at GrayBeard's. I saw a tool in a magazine either, "Rifle" or "Reloader" in which you placed a .22LR shell the nose of the bullet was exposed so that you could file it flat. Thus turning it into almost a semi wad cutter. Has any one seen one or used one, or for that matter tell me the name of it, so I could research it my self. I know I saw it within the last six months.

 Was it an old issue? Hanned is no longer in business. CCI used to make a "small game bullet" that had the flat tip. You could easily make a jig. Drill the case hole then step up a bit larger to accommodate the rim. The hanned just took off the tip. Metal could be used or wood with a metal sheet on top. Then file flat.
 You may want to check out the paco kelly acurizer and nasty nose. I made a jig similar to this and it does perform beyond any expectations I had. By the way the hanned method does not add accuracy. The paco kelly does.

Neil Waltz makes a resizing die for presses that produces a hollow point or an Eley style dimple. It also increases the diameter slightly. Rimfire Central has many threads on it.

It did NOT make them into semiwadcutters but merely put a small flat point on the tip. They look much like the CCI SGB after the operation. The company that made them has long since gone out of business so they are now available only via the used market. I have one of each for .22LR and .22Magnum I think still around here somewhere.

If you are interested drop me a PM and ask me to look for it. I'd be willing to sell it as I don't use it anyway.

Thank You for the kind offer Mr.Graybeard, I think I'll try to make one myself. If it works I'll really get brave and try to post a picture of my handiwork. Will give me something to do this winter by the fire.
Mr. Graybeard, was the accuracy improved or in your opinion did the bullet seem to "hit harder" after the operation?

Yes to both. Somewhere buried in the Product Reviews they were written up many years ago. I'm sure the review is still there. I think you can access them via the old home page and the link to that should be near the top in a sticky in the Product Discussion Forum I think.

Since you insert the bullet into the tool and then use a file to trim off the tip you'll need a means of hardening the tool once done. I hope you have the means to do all that if you take it upon yourself to make one. I'm sure most any machinist with a lathe could but then it must be properly hardened.
