Anyone with Katahdin experience?
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:50:49 AM »
I'm starting to think about buying an Encore Katahdin. Probably a Pro Hunter in 45-70 and a 209x50 muzzleloader.

I wondered if anyone would care to share their experiences with this particular model? I'd like to know about accuracy, muzzle velocities and recoil, although I'm not particularly recoil sensitive.

Thank you in advance.

I have 3 katahdins:  209x50, 444M and 12ga -20" turkey.
All have mt's. I use the 209 & 444 on pistol frames.
Tried the 12 ga that way. regular loads ok, but you can't hang onto 2 oz turkey loads even with a thumb hole stock.
209 does not shoot 200 gr shock-waves well. I need more time with different bullets. Recoil is mild with 100 gr 777 both as pistol or rifle.
444 as a pistol works well with hornaday 265's. recoil is  less than my 375 jdj contender. 1" groups with 2x7 burris.
I never shot it as a rifle. In my zone I can shoot it as a pistol but not as a rifle??
I have not chrono'd any of the K's yet but the terminal performance has been good. deer seem just as dead as with longer barrels.
Unless your shooting extreme ranges, I doubt the short barrel will disappoint. They sure are a nice carry. I sling both rifle and pistol upside down on my off side, grabbing forend with off hand, letting sling wrap around elbow for support.
I have been a lost child most of my life.
Since being born in a log cabin that I built with my own hands, it has been an uphill struggle all the way.  Being so devastatingly handsome, intelligent,  rich-beyond-belief, and humble have all worked together to shape me and my destinies.

I have the 209x50 and love its quick handling. Mine is ported... not sure if that is needed or even how much it works but the set works good for me on whitetail.

Have a .209x50 and a .460 S&W and like them. Quick handling and the stock/recoil pad combination really cuts down on the punishment.

I have a Katahdin barrel in 45 70,  A limbsaver pad that is made for the plastic stock tames the recoil or at least makes it possible to shoot.

This is one of those that I am sure I will keep.  Very short, super handy, relatively light and it does look good!  I have a Leupold 1-4 X 20 on it which is about perfect for what I can do with a 45 70.

I have a couple of boxes of the Hornady  leverevolution ammo I will get around to trying.  I had a .450 Marlin barrel.  They are essentially identical ballistically but the 45 70 has so much ammo available there is no comparison.  I do reload but the 45 70 will go hunting with me and I don't have to ever worry about being without ammo.

Short handy lightweight rifles will spoil you for a full size anything in short order.

I have the old style ported 18" 45-70 Katahdin barrel set up with a decellerator pistol grip and 2-7 handgun scope. It shoots 1" at 100 yards with Hornady Leverevolution. It simply infuriates my buddys when I out shoot there slug guns and muzzleloader's with it!
