The Humble 336
« on: February 16, 2008, 04:37:03 PM »
While I did have a nice Glenfield 30 and a 30A, oddly enough the one Marlin I didn't have was a 336 in .30-30. I found one yesterday in a pawn shop for $175.00. It looked a little sad sitting there on the rack. There were some light rust specks and bubba had installed a sling using the bullseye of course. It had a new looking Simmons Deerfield 3-9X32 scope in See-Thru mounts on it. The sn# shows it was made in 1976. When I got it home it cleaned up nicely with some 0000 steel wool and WD-40. You can't even tell there ever was any rust. I may order a new bullseye and a front sight hood for it. It's the perfect mate to my .35 Remington 336.

When I get enough of these See-Thru mounts saved up I'm gonna sell them at the scrap dealer and buy a new car;)

I may try the Simmons scope on my 39A.

Show you how dumb I am, I thought Glenfield 30 and a 30A, were Marlins?

1976 was an espicially good year for Marlins! My 336 was made in that year and shoots sub MOA to MOA groups at 100 and is regularly under 2 1/2 inches at 200 yards. Bully for you on your new friend! ;D

Well, the Glenfields were made by Marlin but I didn't have a 336 in .30-30.

Swampman, nice rifle sounds like you got a deal on it too.  Marlins have really taken a jump in price in my part of the country lately.  Rough ones are bringing 200.  I was a little disappointed in the photograph though, as usual the quality was good but there were no neat knives or other cool stuff displayed.

That's just how Grandpa found my 336.
I can shoot mine 2" at 100yd with bad eyes.
As much as I like buying an using my new toys, I will have it to the end.

P.S. I also removed the scope and mile high rings.

Funny thing, my 336 in .35 Rem. came with see-thru rings on it? I'll give them to whoever wants them for shipping, email me, please?

Man I feel robbed I give 250 for a nice one and thought I did fairly good.  Rough one are always 200 or so here so nice at 250 seemed fair.  I was a newby also so I may have payed a little much in the joy of the minute.  No buyer remorse, it out shoots the winnie I got rid of shooting lead and 9 grains of unique for a plinker laod and we all know you cant shoot lead in a micro groove right?

$250.00 is a good price IMO.  I just paid $295.00 for a nice pre-CBS 336 in .35 Remington.

The 336 is one the top three most popular rifles in North America(336, 1894 and Rem Model 700). It's not really humble at all ;D

You used to be able to buy a down-scale version of the 336 EVERYWHERE. I used to admire them as a kid  at the Canadian Tire stores. Very popular deer rifle. ;)

D--mn good gun. ;)

I got my first 336T .30-30 back in 1958.  It is still clean and accurate.  I took the scope and ramp off for a while, and it is my saddle gun right now.

Thanks I don't feel so robbed now.  Can't believe I lived so long without one.  9.0 grain unique and a 170 grain lead bullet sure makes a fun plinker out of it.  SN

As kids we used to debate amongst ourselves the relative virtues of the Winny 94 and the Marlin 30-30. I can still remember preferring the Marlin or was it the 94. And while I am on this subject I think its a crime that the old top ejecting steel receiver 94 is no longer available.

I think the pre-64 Winchester 94 is nicer looking.  I think the 336 is a much better gun.

Don't have a 336, but I did pick up a 30 AS cheap just before deer season last fall.  Stopped at the local sporting goods store to see what they had.  The store owner was in poor health and the silent partner in the business was behind the counter.  A kid comes in and wants to know if they will buy the rifle back that he bought some time before as he wasn't going to go up north to hunt and needed a shotgun for the local shotgun only zone.  The partner behind the counter said they didn't buy guns back and that the owner wasn't available to appraise the gun for trade.  The kid had started to pull the rifle out of the case and I noticed it was a lever gun.  I asked to see what he had and how much he wanted for it.  He pulled out the 30 AS that looked like it had been put away wet in the case as it was fairly well spotted.  It sported a Bushnell Sportview scope in iron sighter mounts and the stock a little beat up.  When the kid said $75, I said sold.  With some bronze wool, WD40 and some flitz it's cleaning up pretty well.  Not perfect, but pretty good.  The fore arm actually has some decent figure to it.  I had been thinking about an all weather gun or a beater as the weather in the area I hunt can get pretty bad with rain, sleet, snow, and fog.  This 30 AS was just the ticket.  Got the deal for once that I always hear about the other guy getting.

That is a great deal.  If the 30AS is anything like my Glenfield 30 or 30A it will be a great shooter.

Maybe you should put that young man on your Christmas card list. What a deal ! I like the idea of a beater Marlin though I personally take very good care of my firearms. It would be kind of nice to have one that I didn't worry too much about.

I agree but, it sounded to me like this boy was destitute, I'd probably offer a fair price, that I could of afforded?

Please do not misunderstand what I was actually joking about ... to me a fair price is what two parties agree to ... I surely didn't mean to say you did anything wrong. I would have torn my pocket loose getting $75 out had I been in your shoes. Good shooting to you ...

This is my older Glenfield 30GT bought new in 1979 for $129.99 at the Western Auto store in Lusk, Wyoming.  I've forgotten how many mulies have fallen to this carbine.

I laugh when I read that it takes 24 inch barrel to match published ballistics.   This Glenfield barrel is 18.5 inches and topples mule deer with ease.  The time proven moderate velocity 30-30 bullet with plenty of exposed lead does not bounce off!

Good hunting to you.
