super 16 45-70 loads
« on: March 30, 2008, 05:57:04 PM »
I have had this barrel for a while and have been reluctant to shoot, it does not have a muzzle brake.
Has anyone else shot this barrel and how uncomfortable is it to shoot? What the recoil like?
does anyone have some PET load for this?
What you best load?

Thanks!

My Super 16 has laminated rife stocks and a factory brake.  With top loads safe in a Contender it's recoil is heavy - at least as heavy as my 9.5# Siamese M98 with Ruger-level loads.  For most shooting I prefer 300-grain HPs and BlueDot powder,  ~1400 fps and relatively low recoil and report, kills well to 100 yards.  For more power I use AA2015 for 1600 fps and much heavier recoil.  400-grain bullets with 15 grains of Unique is accurate and recoil is mild.  Velocity is around 1050 fps, nothing to sneeze at with a 400-grain bullet.  Factory 405 loads are not bad either.
