Just bought a ultra slug hunter 20ga ammo recommendations
« on: February 14, 2008, 12:28:47 PM »
I just bought a 20ga ultra slug hunter. I've heard good things about them any recommendations on what kind of slugs to try. What kind of accuracy should I expect.

Thanks
jake

Try the Hornady SST. My USH gives me 1 1/2 to 2 inch group at 100 yards. Put the smackdown on a nice 8pt with them this year.
Tried the lightfields. 4-5 inch group & after 3 or 4 shots it wouldnt eject the lightfields.  It took my USH 10 rounds or so before the groups tighten up.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I think all the sabot slugs out there would work. You just have to find the ones that work well in your particular barrel. The best we've found so far are the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 3" in our 20 ga. Tracker II's. YMMV

Mine likes the Winchester Partition Gold 2 3/4" the best.  Next is the Rem Copper solids.  Mine seems to like 2 3/4 better than 3 in. in all brands.  Just take out a loan & go buy a bunch of different flavors & head for the range with a bunch of targets & a pencil.   Have Fun

Everyone will brag about this slug or that shooting 2" groups at 100 yards, but what slug is effective on deer at that range as well?
Looking for one that will punch through a deer cleanly even on a marginal shot at extended ranges.  Accuracy is only half the game for people who actually hunt and dont just punch paper.

Any of the currently offered sabot slugs should perform well on deer as far as they will shoot accurately from your shotgun.  Sabot slugs in 20 gauge have reliably killed deer for me at 150-175 yds.

My partner's gun shot the Lightfields, Buckhammers and Hastings slugs very well. Granted we only got to try them at 50 yards, but I was impressed. The Lightfields and Buckhammers were one ragged hole. I just got mine back from H&R last week and plan to try it in a few weeks. I'm probably going to lean toward the Buckhammers if they perform in my gun like they did in my buddy's. He shot a boar with this load in another gun a few years ago and the performance was impressive.

I shot a bunch of Hastings out of mine but the Buckhammers always shot a tad better. Kurt

I would say the Hornady  sst's hands down.  I can get 2 out 3 shots touching at 100 yards of the bench.  As for performance I got my biggest Iowa whitetail (nice 10 pointer) this past winter.  It ranged 123 yards and he dropped like a rock flopped around for a few and that was it. :)

I also have had great luck with the Winchester Platnum Tips but they are getting harder and harder to find.  I used them for about 5 years and never lost a deer.
I must be crazy.

If you are not shooting more than 100 yards, I would try Winchester and Remington rifled slugs. They are cheap and accurate. They leave a little leading in the barrel that you would need to clean after 20 shots or so.

In my Tracker II 20g, the Winchester rifled slugs are capable of bulls eye performance at 50 yards from the bench, no sand bags and no rest.

You do not have to break the bank to kill deer within 100 yards.
