Encore hammer question?
« on: March 21, 2008, 09:22:48 AM »
Does anyone make a hammer spur for the Encore. I  can cock it but it would be easier if it had one of those hammer spurs like seen on lever guns. It has a scope on and that is why is more difficult to get to .

You can send the frame to Thompson/Center and they can upgrade the frame so it has the Prohunter type of hammer that can be moved to the side for easier shooting with a scope.  Personally, I shoot a lot of Encores and a Contender with scopes and have never felt the need of a hammer spur.  They do make them but putting them on sometimes causes misfires.

A hammer extension is almost a necessity with a low mounted scope in the Encore.    The addition of a hammer extension to a stock  Encore is inviting misfires.  Yep, the hammer extension adds weight to the hammer and the stock hammer spring is often too weak.  My Encore worked great as a muzzle loader but had misfires with my first center fire barrel, a .30-06.

Stronger hammer springs are available from that guy we do not talk about on this site.

That's funny; I have all sorts of low mounted Encore scopes and have never used a hammer extension or felt the need of one.

You don't have to look far to find bent hammers when used with extensions and stronger springs.   I always used to put extensions on my Contenders.  Now I don't have them on any of my frames.  No missfires and I can cock all of them, even with gloves on.

Try to cock it in a tree stand some morning when it is 20 below zero-with gloves on.

I bought a new pro hunter a couple of weeks ago but did not like the feel of the hammer when moved from side to side. There is a fellow on ebay who makes a hammer extension for the encore very light and has them in silver or black and are a perfect fit as he makes them to fit the hammer. I picked up one and have no problems. also not too expensive.

Could you PM me a link? Thanks, Belem makes one too that fits the hammer. I have no fear of misfires. They don't weigh that much and should not be a problem.

I think that is the one that is currently on my Encore.  Mine is very light and attaches with three set screws.  The first one I had was a  piece of trash.

Looked at the ones on E-Bay.  Have tried all of the different types shown.  They are not good.   Some of them have been known to cause hammers to break.  Am working in the Peoples Demokratic Republik of NJ on a short term job.  When I get back to OK I will look at the package mine came in and let you know who made it and where to get it.  The one I have is different from the ones on E-Bay.
