need some boot suggestions
« on: May 09, 2008, 03:42:54 PM »
I will be going on a Moose hunt in mid september just north of Denalli.  I have been told we will be doing  60% sitting 40% walking(for a week).  I never really have aproblem with cold feet if I was walking but sitting is a whole other story.  Anyone have any suggestions? whats going to be comfortable to walk in and warm  while sitting?

Thanks

I picked up a pair of -40 Ranger boots a few years ago.  I have not walked for long distances but for stand hunting they are unreal.  Nov. in Virginia is pretty close to Sept. near Fairbanks.  Have never had cold feet.  Problem might be height.  They are only about 12 " high.  Lots of moose hunting seems to need hip boots are close to it.  Will try mine out in AK in Aug. for caribou (I hope).

I do much of my moose hunting wearing hip boots but I work out of a boat. Otherwise I wear Xtratuf knee high rubber boots with a wool felt insole and wool socks. I am good to about 15 degrees in most cases with those Xtratuffs.  I don't live as far north as you plan to hunt but keep in mind that much of moose hunting is done on wet ground.  I don't recommend the insulated Xtratufs, I find them too bulky and clumsy.  I don't think you are likely to see real cold temps at that time, but its been a long while since I lived up that way.  For lace up boots I'd consider WATERPROOF goretex type boot with moderate insulation - they might be easier to walk in if you're not used to rubber boots.

Maybe Sourdough can speak up here - he hunts closer to where you'll be.

Don't take my word on this hope others will comment on their preferences.

Usually with moose your feet are going to be in water at some point.  If you are river hunting then hips are pretty much standard.  A minimum for me would be 18" LaCrosse Burly rubber boots.  That said, in my area September can be fairly warm and a good pair of high hiking boots with insulate would do as the moose are still pretty high up.

If you are hunting with an outfitter I would ask him.  The terrain up here varies a lot.  It would help a little to know if this is a float trip, spot and stalk, or what.

+1 for the lacrosse burly.  Those are about the best you can get for hunting.  Ask about the area you are hunting, because like said above, you might find it necessary to have hip boots.

Those lacrosse you can get with quite a bit of thinsulate to keep you warm.

I can't suggest anything from Alaska(I have no experience up there) but, in Illinois I use the military white (bunny, with the air valve) boots with one pair of cotton socks and can stay on stand all day?

you would be surprised how many people up here use bunny boots.  Big, thick, and waterproof, that is about all you need.

What does your outfitter suggest?  If you don't have one, contact a reputable one and ask him what he recommends.

Make sure your hiking boots are Gore-Tex lined.  That is a must to me.  Wear either Poly or Wool socks.  Use those socks to break in the boots before the trip.

As for hip waders, my favorite are from Cabela's.  Neoprene with a nylon strap across the top of the foot to tighten it for hiking.  This holds the boot on tight and keeps your foot from moving around in the boot.  By unsnapping the buckle they are easy to take off.
