.45-70 Leverevolution & Buffalo Bore Magnums in a BC?

Any of you guys have any experience with the Buffalo Classic and .45-70 Leverevolutions or Buffalo Bore .45-70 Magnums?  I'm interested in distance shooting, still having payload at the end.

Tanoose was gonna shoot the Buffalo Bore ammo, but I couldn't find his report on it. I think several members have shot the LE ammo, but if you're gonna be reloading the brass, be aware it's shorter than standard 45-70 brass. Also, Hornady downgraded the velocity of the LE ammo to normal trapdoor speeds for quite a while, the first production was rated at 2050fps, then down to 1875fps, and back up to 2050fps, so be sure to read the box if you want the fast stuff.

I've been shooting the 2050 LEs in my standard rifle and it and I like them.  I know I'll probably gain 100 or so fps in the longer barrel.  It seems to me the blunt bullets in the buffalo bore have to be working against themselves.  I haven't tried them yet.  I'm hoping for an elk hunt next Fall, and wanted to put a BC barrel on my .45-70s SB2, stock and fore end.  I can do that, can't I?  I know I can scope it and will have to because my old eyes don't work any more with open sights.  Is there a dovetail blank available to fill the gap at the front sight?

Yes, the BC barrel can be fitted to any SB2 frame made since 1987.

I use a Marbles blank on my scoped BC/Target barrels.

I wouldn't count on the LE ammo shooting significantly faster in the longer barrel, it's made for the 24" barrel of the XLR. I've made some comparisons between the 22" and 32" 45-70 barrels, with the 300gr Nosler PP and a healthy dose of H4198, velocity is 2425fps, the same load in the 32" barrel goes 2450fps. But with H322 or IMR4198 and 350gr bullets, the velocity is considerably faster in the longer barrel, so it just depends on the powder used. If the proprietary powder used in the LE ammo is optimized for the 24" barrel, you may even get slower velocities out of the longer barrel.

Marble Arms is "just down the road" "a hop skip and a jump"  An hour and 15 minutes away is just like going to the grocery store here on Da U.P.  I'll stop by next week.  I enjoy their stuff.  I'll park the Ponca Indian at a crafts store and have lots of time!  I'm just getting into reloading, and I'm starting with the straight cases, .45-70, .357 and .38.  Wow Tim 2450 is cranking it out.  Thanks for all the info.    Pete

An hour and 15 min at $3.60 a gallon is a loooong ways to go for a $10 shipped item, of course I'm sure you can find something else there to make the trip worthwhile, like maybe the Marbles 009813 peep tang site for the BC!!

Tim, gas or a loaf of bread is a 20 mile round trip from here.  Going to Gladstone and Escanaba is a good break from winter cabin fever.  There's also a sizzling steak at Hereford and Hops, a martini perhaps, good wine and a room for the night.....I may be 67, but I'm not dead yet!!!  (the Ponca may tell you otherwise....don't believe her, some injuns speak with forked tongue.)

Yesterday morning I had coyote tracks in the snow within 50 feet of the back door.  I'm going to sit out this evening, it's clear and there'll be a half moon, and perhaps we'll get to see what a LE .45-70 does to a yote.  Hopefully I'll let you know in the morning.

I can't say that having coyotes in my back yard means I live in a rural area, they're here too, had deer, yotes and even a porcupine in my back yard and I live in the city limits of a city of 160,000!! Enjoy that roadtrip and night out!!

I guess that means you can't "discharge a firearm within city limits".  We'll just have to take up a collection for a silencer for ya!  That way we could all be the Handi Jail Bird Crew.  Seriously, I couldn't go back to suburban or urban life.  We, Patty and I, do it all here at home.  Hunt, shoot, whatever, no neighbors, no hassle.  We shoot at first light, because the wind is down.  In the summer, that's 5 a.m.  Try that around folks and see how many friends you can loose!  Sorry, we're away from the topic.  Before I go, Tim, can you get one of your barrels threaded???

I don't know, Joe, the avatar came out of gallery 3 here on GBO.  I trapped, banded and released hawks and owls for 15 years and I had a Black and white cat that would have brought home deer if he weighed 50 lbs.  That's why I chose it. The Redtailed Hawk in the picture is probably a large female, if all other things are in proportion.  Her whole attitude is that of a just now hand released hawk....legs down, looking back.  I think the kitty was dubbed in.

I can't tell you about the LE ammo but a WIN. 300 HP from a BC leaves a nasty hole from chest to tail at 60yds.

On the LE ammo: My hunting buddy has a Browning High Wall and I have a WIN. High Wall, an 1886 WIN. take down, a BG and a HANDI. Havn't tried them in the HANDI yet but none of the others like the LE at all but they all love the 300HPs.
