Late start but early finish!
« on: April 18, 2008, 11:29:35 AM »
Greetings,

I started not to go yesterday, but after a few chores I headed out for the one hour drive at 8AM. AT 9 I loaded my 870 with Winchester 2 oz. #6's and started up the ridge. At the top I heard something and thought a squirrel might have been fussing. I stopped and listened a bit....at least as good as I can.....and made a few soft calls. I was in a farm road through some oaks up into a pasture. All of a sudden, I saw a fan spread just on the horizon. I could just see the top of his blue head. I hit the dirt and scooted on my butt behind a small pine to my left. Then I heard the booming gobble, and another about 30 yards further out the ridge. Played the game for about 10 minutes, and thought they were gone. Called again and two hens came running over the horizon. He just had to follow, and he brought his friend with him. I had two gobblers in full strut. The big one stretched his neck to gobble and I cut loose at 38 yards.

Left the vehicle at 9.....returned at 9:36. He had an 11 inch beard, 1 and 1/8 inch spurs, and I weighed him two hours later, dressed, on digital scales, at 21.2 pounds. He is a good one for our neck of the woods.

The Winchester Supremes and the Undertaker tube did a real good job. He hit the dirt.

Thanks,
