Woods gun
« on: April 03, 2008, 03:08:47 PM »
Well I did it,I cut the barrel on my 357 to 16.5! It is the nicest little woods gun going! Took a hacksaw to the end and trued it with a piloted end mill. Polished with 320 grit cloverleaf and blued her up after cutting the crown with the ball bearing method. It hit the same POI as before and the groups are just as good. One hole at 20 yards with 148s and 1 inch at 50 with home cast 200s. Next the front ramp and bead goes on with the peep, a new stock and a MAX chamber!

Enjoy

I may be mistaken but I though I read somewhere that in order to be legal to hunt with, a gun had to have a barrel at least 18"? I know a shotgun has to be at least that lenght. You may own a gun with a barrel as short as 16&1/8" but not to hunt with unless it is a handgun.

Nice setup. Work on the stock and get the cheek weld down for snap shooting. Try that with no sights a la US Army training for Viet Nam.
Believe me a half our of intensive practice and you can hit mighty small targets to 50 yards.

16" is minimum legal barrel length in a rifle in the states. My 94 trapper is 16 1/2" from Winchester.

That looks like it will be the perfect carbine for deep woods deer.

I have put some thought to a setup like that.  I bet it swings like a dream!  What does it weigh?
