What bullet weight does your 14" 223 like?
« on: March 29, 2008, 03:23:01 PM »
Just picked up a 14" TC 223 barrel for my Contender.  Been doing some reading and it sounds like the 1-14 twist prefers 40 - 50 grain bullets over the 55s.  What have you guys found?

Thanks

Yep, 50 grain Hornady bullets and H-335 or WC-844.  Good-luck...BCB

50 gr. or lighter as with some of the SX type bullets and H322 or an equally fast powder.  The commonly used powders for .223 are too slow to achieve a complete burn in the shorter barrels resulting in less than optimum accuracy and performance.

My 10" .223 likes the 40-grain B-Tips and V-Max bullets best.  Accuracy is very good and velocity is flatter....for a ten-incher.  Actually I prefer to use BlueDot in this barrel, the report is much less  than with Varget or H322, and so is the fireball!  Velocity is down a few hundred fps but accuracy holds.  This is not a long range barrel anyway.

50 grain ballistic tips and Winchester 55gr soft points.  I have tried other 55s, but they did not keep under moa.  These two bullets will shoot less than moa to 200 meters.

Thanks guys

I've got some 40 and 50gr V-Max on the way.  I have some 4198, so we'll give it a shot for now.

52gr Speer HPBT over H-335. If your barrel is a std TC barrel it should be a 1-12" twist.   KN

Ive used 50 v max 52 a max 55 psp's and 60 v max

best results were with the 50 and 52's but I don't remember what powder I was using. Most likely H335 but Im not 100% on that.

KN - Your right, I emailed TC and they told me the 223 is 1-12" twist.

I wonder if that changed sometime along the line???  My Lyman and Hornady manuals both state the 14" TC they tested was 1-14.

Thanks

I have had mine since the early eighties. Don't know about any earlier than that.   KN

Mine is pretty partial to just about anything in 55 grains.  What is odd is my carbine barrel only likes the 45 gr Winchester white box ammo.
