Dan Wesson Barrel?
« on: March 25, 2008, 01:55:05 AM »
Who makes the barrels for Dan Wessons?  I am looking for a 2nd barrel for the .375 I have.  Also, I am looking to repplace a .44 mag Magna Port barrel with a nonported barrel.

Thanks
Doug

Hey Doug,

I would suggest contacting Dan Wesson directly.  I'm not sure if they can help on the 375 barrel but I know they have 44 barrels and shrouds.

Parts orders only: (Genny)...... genny@cz-usa.com

I don't know if it matters to you or not but the new ones don't match the old barrels in appearance. They laser etch the barrels and the lettering is white. Just figured I'd mention it.

Dan Wesson does not do anything with the .375 Supermag.  I thought we had discussed the name of the barrel maker here but I can not find the thread.

I recently acquired a 357 SM barrel and shroud that looked fine to me, it did not have white lettering.

I ordered a 357 mag barrel a couple of years ago for an older Monson made pistol pack and was disappointed to find they didn't match. the new barrel had white lettering where the information was laser etched into the shroud. I ended up getting the barrel that matched on e-bay before the idiotic rule changes.

Everyone has to realize that technology advances, why keep stamping the information into the frame when you can have it laser engraved. I keep seeing comments that it is a bad thing that DW moved into the next century.

I do understand that if you are putting together an old set of anything you need it to match but I do not understand how the thought is if I buy new it will be the same as it was 30 years ago, I just do not understand the logic.

I think that the newest guns from the new CNC machines and the laser engraving are some of the best revolvers made.

Please if you want to finish off a 25 or 30 year old set look for that old of stuff Do not buy new.

Wow , I was just trying to give Dougk a little information so he would know in advance what to expect. I didn't expect to be called a frickin moron for trying to help out. i was not complaining that it didn't match, just letting him know that the new parts are different.

I dont think your a moron.  ;)
Doug

p.s. I have some of the new stuff and I have to agree with David that it appears to be very high quality.  And I have to agree with Grimjim that it does not match.  I do think DW stopped the with lettering as mine does not have it.

Thanks guys for sorting that out in a good way.  All opinions are welcome, but lets be careful not to communicate them in such a way that we make others feel like they are not welcome in the discussion.

By the way, just for further barrel info, Lothar Walther has a US branch in Cumming, GA and they do sell barrel blanks.  If we can find someone to machine the threads, this may be a source of premium barrels in custom lengths and configurations.

Here is the link.  Search their site for what you need.

http://www.lothar-walther.de/html/386.php

You will find that they make 375 rifle blanks.

Dan Wesson barrels are a rather straight forward (read simple) machining exercise as long as you have blank with the correct size bore and twist rate.

Dan Wesson barrel shrouds are interchangeable between calibers on the large frames and supermag frames.  So if you can find or just order any supermag or large frame barrel shroud the length you want and get a machinest to turn the barrel blank to the proper size and thread, you will have your 375 barrel.  Other than finding one on the auction sites, that is about your only alternative for the 375.

It's a shame they took them off e-bay that was a good source for shrouds and barrels. :(

GRIMJIM I would love to sit and have a beer but living on the other side of the country from you is going to make it hard. Just to show you what type of person I am send me your address and I will send you some 460 Supermag brass for your collection.

I am not surprised what Dave did, from my experiences he is a class act.

Interesting how we can read something into a text message that would happen in a live conversation...
