1919a4 rear sight

I've seen some of the variations on rear sights including the Springfield someone posted. A Browning 1919a4 rear peep sight would be good and cheap to adapt for a cannon.  They can be had for $30, and adjust for windage and elevation.

Is that canted to the left or right slightly (as are most ladder sights of rifles that go out to many hundreds of yards) to account for the drift from the spin of the bullet?

If there's a cant it's a product of me or my camera hand.  I don't know about any spin-induced drift that occurs, although there is a phenomenon of somewhat helical yawing that settles out after 200 yards with large calibers.

You'd have to put a square up to it to perceive the offset.

Agree, the drift is noticeable WAY out there.

the problem with using a sight like this is you would have to either have the sight base off a 1919A4
 or build a base which requires machining for the flat spring and for the windage adjustment.
if you had to go that route I think I would go with a repro tang sight off a sharps as it is at least of the period.

You are right, that $30 doesn't include the needed sight base.  Those are further down the linked page for $35, but that makes the setup a not-so-cheap option.
