Legacy puma 44 Magnum
« on: December 20, 2007, 04:29:15 PM »
I  have a New Puma iin 44 magnum  that I  am disgusted with.  Out of the box at 50 yds the rifle shoots 18" high and 6 " to the right.  This is with the sight elevator in it's  lowest position and the front sight drifted abnormally too far to the right and the Taurus tang sight I enstalled obviously out of center line with bore too far to the left.  How could a company let a rifle go through quality control like this?  It  will cost several dollars extra to  send the rifle to their warranty repair and you don't know then if it will come back "REPAIRED".  The groups are quite acceptable as is but the sights are so much off center it is ridulous to sight down the barrel.  Has anyone else had a similar problem with the Legacy products?

I don't know what sights the Legacy models use, but Steve young the 92 guy did tell me on the phone that Rossi uses the same height front sights on all the different length barrels of the EMF/Rossi, and it does not work so good with 45's and probably 44's as well.   I have a 24 inch barrel on my Rossi, and it comes out OK with my loads, but I'm sure I'd have problems with the same loads and the short 20 inch barrel.  Sounds like you need a longer front sight.  As far as your rifle shooting to the "right"...and your sight looks to be too far to the right...move that sight to the left if that is where you want your groups to go...cause the back sight needs to go in the same direction as you would like to see your groups go.  So if it's shooting right, tap your rear sight to the LEFT...and it won't look so far off center either.   Don't know what the deal is with your tang sight, but I'm just commenting on your rear barrel sight being to far to the right.

I notice with the loads I'm shooting out of this Rossi I have (maybe between 900 and 1000 fps  45Colt) it hits where I want it to, but as I load them hotter, the groups start climbing and hitting higher.   If I were to shoot all hot loads all the time I'd need a higher sight too, but I'm happy with my hand loads the way they are.

I do agree that it would be nice if Rossi would figure out the heights of the front sights for us, I have heard complaints on the 454's also.    I heard the .357's have enough adjustment and come out OK with most of the loads and barrel lenghts, guess I'll find out as I'm planning on buying one of those this next year.

Is your front sight dovetailed in the barrel?   I do not know what the legacy rifle has...but my EMF Hartford model has the dovetailed front sight.

Good luck on getting it to point of aim.

Jim

I have the same problem with elevation being about 8" high at 25 yd. This is out of a 357 24" oct. barrel.  Front sight is dovetailed and can't find a taller sight that fits the cut.  It's bigger than 3/8ths.  May try to get some muzzle loader sights and see about fitting them.  Don't want to stake the thing in.  Anyone have the same problem or have suggestions for a proper front sight?  DP.

I bought a Puma 44 with a 16" barrel and I had the SAME DARN PROBLEM. But my windage was fine. I called Legacy Sports and ordered a 1/2" front sight which is taller. And at 50 yards I can shot out the bottom of a 12OZ coke can. I think shipping and all it was like 12$. But that taller front sight fixed it perfect!!
